What grass is this

I have this grass growing in my front yard. Our lawn, when we moved here 6 months ago was, and still is full of crabgrass and weeds and rough grass. I found this in the back yard and thought it wold be great for the front yard so put some in a vacant area. It is a clumping grass and is about 12“ tall. I was hopeful that it would be short enough to let it grow and cover the whole lawn area. For me 12” is a great height but for my husband and particularly for the neighbors it is too tall.

Can anyone tell me what it is and if it’s a keeper or a thug to be disposed.

Looks like green kyllinga. It's a member of the sedge family and not a grass. Thus if you wanted to kill it, grass killers won't touch it. You would need a sedge killer like Sedge Hammer, Image, or I believe there's another one.

Green kyllinga looks like nutgrass, also a sedge, but GK will survive with almost no water for seasons and seasons. Nutgrass needs plenty of water to thrive and can be killed back by withholding water.

@norm1977, wow, I hadn’t expected a response or comment anymore at this late stage, but it’s always nice when someone checks in! On the whole, the lawn is holding up great. One of my dogs passed away in 2019, 😢 so it’s only taking abuse from one instead of two now, and there are definitely places along the edges where it has died because those are regular pee spots for my boy. But I expected that, and they’re not big areas. Right now a good portion of the lawn is dormant for winter, especially where it’s more exposed when there’s the occasional frost like we got last week. It is one of the best garden investments I made!

James, bluegrass varieties are now often selected for having high sod strength and wear tolerance, check your online seed sources and do a bit of reading. The mixture I had sown about eight years ago had contained a high percentage of a variety called 'Granite', which I specifically sought out for its high wear tolerance and indeed it shows no discernible wear or thinning on any of the high traffic walkways. I'm just stating 'Granite' as a suggestion, there's other excellent and likely superior varieties now available. Whatever grass mixture you select, amend your soil if necessary and keep your grass fed and watered when need be. Granite - Dark green, wear tolerant (Midnight-type), with excellent summer stress tolerance. Tolerates a low mowing height.

GA narrows it down. The zone is immaterial, because it stretches across the country. In 7B GA I would consider St Augustine first and a TTTF fescue second. St Aug is a coarse bladed grass while most TTTF is fine bladed. St Aug will stand up better to traffic than fescue. For higher traffic spots, like where you step off the deck or porch, you should consider building a hardscape landing like stepping stones or concrete.
