Washer recommendations needed: Top-Load super/ultra capacity
Comments (19)dadoes, thanks for the info. We actually had the dryer exhaust ducting examined to see if the problem was with the dryer (also a Kenmore) originally. But it turned out there wasn't a clog in the dryer exhaust ducting. The issue was that the old Kenmore (100 series) washer's spin was never powerful enough to really spin out enough water from the laundry to allow for drying with a single dryer cycle. The basket/drum on the Maytag Bravo MVWX500X is 4.3 cubic feet, so yes, it is much larger than the basket/drum on our old Kenmore 100 series washer. The Maytag Bravo MVWX500X also does not have a center agitator, but instead has a "low-water washplate wash system". This "low-water washplate wash system" is interesting and new to me. I must say, it's nice not to have the center agitator and a larger drum, since I wanted to be able to wash quilts and comforters, and also loads with multiple large towels. However, I've read that because of how the "low-water washplate wash system" distributes laundry detergent, some detergent could build up on the internal plumbing. We were advised by the installers to run a washer cleaner tablet once a month in this new washer. The manual says this cleaning process can also be accomplished by adding 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach dispenser and running the washer through a wash cycle while empty. When our new washer was installed, the installers also ran a washer cleaner tablet through the machine while it was empty. The washer tablet's ingredients are sodium percarbonate and sodium carbonate. It remains to be seen if any detergent build-up will accumulate in this new washer, even with monthly cleaning, and if that will lead to any mold or mildew issues. If so, our choice of a high-efficiency machine may turn out to be unwise. It also remains to be seen if the electronics and the "low-water washplate wash system" hold up over time, or if there will be technological breakdowns because the machine is digital. We prepared ourselves for the fact that repairs to this machine will likely cost more than a traditional old-style "knob" washer. So this new high-efficiency washer is kind of an experiment in a way. I will try to report back after some time has passed and let everyone know how it's holding up. steveomc, our old Kenmore washer was in fact from the 110 series, lol. The 100 series have a notorious problem with the lid switch. We've had to have the lid switch replaced twice. The lid switch part only costs about $31 dollars but of course, the service visit cost much more than that. We also had to have a repair on another element of the machine, for a total of three repairs. Even with the repairs, the machine just never spun efficiently enough for our liking....See MoreTop loading washer. Got recommendations?
Comments (34)I just returned from over a week on the East Coast helping take care of my very ill Mother. I own a 2017 Analog Speed Queen TL washer which I am very happy with. My Dad replaced their previous 15 year old Maytag with a Maytag Bravo XT last August/September. Having done at least a dozen loads in it last week, I can now share experience rather than just anecdote. What a miserable machine. Using the bulky cycle, it fills with a full tub of water, so the argument that it is a true HE compared to my SQ I disagree with. Sheets-which I washed plenty of as you can imagine-came out balled up more than once. One load when the machine went into a spin had the tub banging against the cabinet. When I went down later to dry the load, it had never properly spun the load and it was soaking wet, necessitating me to do a drain/spin cycle. I watched the wash action for a variety of loads-bedding, bathroom rugs, and clothes. Anemic. Very little turn over. And watching how the wash plate operates leads me to believe it is extremely rough on clothes on a normal cycle. This is all my own opinion and observation. A TL HE machine would never work for me and my needs. I recommend anyone considering a TL machine to explore them carefully. Just because the lid is on the top of the machine does not mean they are all similar in how they function....See MoreBuilt in Front Load vs Top Load washers in laundry room
Comments (17)I may have found my "happy medium". Looks like GE has a new feature that air dries the washer to keep it from getting moldy. This was my wifes biggest issue with the front loader. We will see. Comments (16)linda918, In answer to your original question of whether a Speed Queen FL or an Electrolux FL, I would choose a SQ FL in a second. The reason being I had 2 different Fridgidaire FL washers over the span of 12 years. Fridgidaire is owned and made by Electrolux. The first of the two was forever in break down mode. The amount of $$ I spent at laundromats could have gotten us 3/4 of the way to a new washer. It would 6-8 weeks from a call for repair to having a poorly, barely functioning washing machine again. Fridgidaire would rather rebuild the whole darn washer seven times than issue a lemon refund or a replacement. 2nd Fridgidaire FL washer was more reliable. Lasted 8 years, but we never once had clean and fresh laundry with either washer. Our clothes stunk. Our towels stunk. Our sheets stunk and my formerly always pristine and fresh cleaning rags and napkins were filthy, looking and smelling. I only washed on hot or warm, using extra rinses and highest soil settings with top shelf detergent. Pieces of garbage. If I had to go FL washer today (I have a Speed Queen TL washer for several years now), I would choose Speed Queen or Miele. Both will cost you dearly, but your cleaning results will be good. LG makes good FL washers too but I have space restrictions that most do not. If you do choose LG, get a model that has an internal heater (not all do) so you can have the higher temps needed to do sanitize cycles for sheets, towels, socks and underwear. Good luck with your decision!...See Morelittlegreeny
