After going through two front loader washers - a GE and a Maytag - in 12 years, my highly rated plumber recommended the Speed Queen brand which only makes top loaders. He said the top loaders distribute the weight of the drum and water better on the bearings. I had never heard of the brand but the reviews were off the charts so I bought one. It doesn't match my front loader dryer and you can't put a folding counter/table over it, but mine are behind doors and I have a counter nearby. Very happy with it performance wise.

We bought our first washer/dryer set with a front loader washer about 5 years ago. We LOVE it. It’s been a blessing for me and I can wash large blankets and comforters at home now! Trick to keep it smelling fresh is: keep the detergent drawer open a little, as well as the door. This lets air circulate through while not in use. Also, we wipe up the moisture inside the door and in the rubberized area inside. This part may seem like extra work, but it’s only necessary after several loads and prevents mold/mildew buildup inside the machine. Maintenance is part of owning anything in your home, just like your car! PS: we had wooden “risers” built to raise washer/dryer up 8”. Customized and cheaper than buying from manufacturers.

That's interesting that you found the reviews were off the charts. I bought a Speed Queen a couple of years ago based on the advice of the appliance store salesperson. I've never been so disappointed in an appliance in my life. I had visited the store with the intent of buying an LG top-loader, based on reviews from Consumer Reports and Consumersearch.com. The sales person, however, raved about the Speed Queen and sold me on it. I too had never heard of it. A month or so later, when I realized it was not really getting my laundry clean, I checked Consumer Reports and saw that it had been given a very poor review -- one of the worst washers they had ever tested ! Silly me.... I should have bought the LG top-loader as planned. Lesson learned. (The furniture store refuses to take back the Speed Queen because it is not defective.)
