While inspections after certification happen, they're rather rare. Heck, while getting certification the actual paperwork and fact-checking done can be really lax and up to the farmer just stating it's true. A lot of issues with certified organic sources come after-the-fact when sources hit the market and "3rd party" tests finding pesticide/herbicide/etc residues that technically shouldn't be there. It's a much more lax system that some would believe. It relies heavily on the farmer telling the truth to the government and the fear of having their certification yanked if they're "caught" doing something they shouldn't...and they're usually caught by 3rd party activist groups or the industry sourcing their materials doing occasional testing. This shouldn't be viewed as alarmist, though...most organic farmers are playing by the book (at least in the US). It's a niche market that most of them don't want to screw around with once they have a stable buyer for their premium priced product....See MoreAging and Antibiotics
Comments (20)Cipro as a precaution? That seems like overkill, but perhaps it was a low dose -- or there is nothing milder that is not in the penicillin family? I have two artificial hips and as a precaution am prescribed 1500 mg of amoxicillin before any dental appointment where my gums maybe punctured. You are prescribed this to prevent a systemic infection from traveling through your blood FROM your mouth. (Our mouths are hotbeds of *germs*.) ALWAYS take probiotics along with an antibiotic. The antibiotic kills *everything* along with the 'bad stuff'. The probiotic puts back the 'good stuff' that keeps your digestive system working properly. Nothing seems to help the awful taste in the mouth; prednisone is the worst for that in my experience. I was prescribed levoflxacin for pneumonia in February, but at a 'medium' strength (500 mg.). It was unpleasant, but less unpleasant than worsening pneumonia! I developed an allergy to aspirin after becoming asthmatic and put on steroids in my forties, and earlier to sulfa after taking it for recurring sinus infections. I turned bright red *all over* from the sulfa. Aspirin now makes my sinuses and throat swell. I wish I could take aspirin, since it actually *treats* inflammation. I believe Tylenol works on pain receptors, not the inflamed tissue itself, but that may be another of the 'things I think I know'. The aspirin allergy means I can't use any of the many OTC's like Ibuprofin, etc. (I don't know what makes these much more expensive pills superior to plain aspirin, which is the anti-inflammatory IN them.)...See MoreAllergies and antibiotics? Comments (27)I used to live in St Louis and our church (and my children's schools) was just down the road from Monsanto. Probably one-fourth of our church membership was employed by Monsanto in executive positions. I truly do not believe they would work for and develop products that are killing tons of people. It makes sense to eat as few prepared foods as possible as many of the nutrients get lost in the commercial preparation. Fresh fruits and veggies, home made waffles, fresh meat - these are good foods and most of us thrive on them. I have had allergies since childhood - first eczema and later asthma. I had allergy tests done when I was about 9-10 - I was allergic to practically everything - everything except the milk I detested. I was allergic to wheat, nuts, chocolate - you name it. I was put in the world's most restrictive diet (there is a bit of flour in many canned soups, so my mother had to make soup). She made rice muffins and cooked (awful!). She was a woman with a mission to "cure" her only child of the curse of eczema. It didn't work. In fact, my eczema got worse - dermatologist thought it was probably due to the stress of all this highly restrictive eating and wasn't convinced that eczema was always allergy related. So, we gave up all the hoopla and the eczema continued until about a month before my 23rd birthday. It disappeared when I went on birth control pills right before getting married. Connection? Who knows - have never again had it and haven't taken the pills for decades. The asthma came right after the birth of my first child - again, no one knows if there was a connection. Allergies are mysterious things and even the best allergists will admit that there is more that they don't know than they do know. I have had sensitivities to many, many drugs - not an allergic reaction (that would often be anaphylactic shock). No one knows why. There is no question that antibiotics have been overused in the past and still are in some situations. But that has led to bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotics. If one has the flu and no bronchial infection and ones doctor prescribes an antibiotic, question him intensively - he better have a very, very good reason for treating a virus with an antibiotic. If he doesn't, find another doctor. But if he has a good reason (secondary bacterial infection), then for heaven's sake - take the antibiotic. I don't get my medical information from media celebrities or TV shows - especially when they are invariably selling something. I would not trust this woman as an authority on anything other than self-promotion....See MoreNosebleed. Should I have not taken her to the doctor?
Comments (48)The reason I mentioned humidity was that many years ago when we were first married we bought a house which was heated with coal and badly regulated. The humidity in the house must have been like the desert. I had horrible sinus infections but my toddler son would get nosebleeds. I was in my early 20's and panicked thinking it could be leukemia. Thankfully after we moved away he never had a nosebleed again and I never had a sinus infection. Re: caring relatives. I had eye surgery on Wed. and texted my son today and asked if he was interested in how it went. My daughter was texting me all day Wed. , but he said he knew he'd hear if there was a problem. Then he asked how it went. So consider yourself lucky to have people who care....See MoreChi
