I wait patiently for a new book to come out, and then read it just as patiently. I may take three days to complete, savoring the storyline and appreciating the ins and outs of the plot. And then it's time for an immediate re-read which goes much quicker. When I was younger, I zipped right through a new book. But now, savoring is more enjoyable.

I've written here before that I have several books I loved so much that I never finished them because I didn't want them to end. It didn't change the pace of reading, though. I just put them down and never picked them up again. I better get to it...I'm getting older and time is running out!

I usually read it as slowly as possible; just a few chapters at a time. Of course if it's a 'whodunnit' or a long family saga I tend to find I have forgotten the plot or who-is-who when there is a complicated family-tree. Blame it old age.

I stay up all night and finish it.

I read for longer stretches of time. Eventually life interrupts or I can’t hold my eyes open, so I put it aside.

If I like a book, I savor it and read it more slowly. But if I don't, I go quicker, and lately I've just stopped and thought life is too short to waste time if I'm not liking it. The latest was the Anna Quinlin book.

I tend to read very quickly, so I'll take breaks and do other things because otherwise my enjoyment is over too soon. When I used to read more books, I didn't take breaks so I would read a book a night. Now, many of my favorite authors have stopped publishing new material, so there are fewer books that interest me. As a result, I try to expand the time it takes me to read a book.

The comments in TV's first paragraph above also mostly describe my approach. I read at the same pace and during the same parts of a day or same activities from day to day. If I'm enjoying a book more than normal, I'll sometimes try to find more time slots for reading. If I find I dislike something, which can happen early on, I don't persist thinking it may get better later. Whether a book does or doesn't get better later, if it doesn't grab my interest in the first 1/4 of it, I move on.

The thought of not finishing a book because of not wanting to be done with it seems curious to me. Why bother reading the first whatever percentage and then stop, without knowing the ending?

The only book that caused me to lose sleep, which was unfortunate because I was very busy and working many hours at the time, was Winds of War. Wouk's tactic of ending chapters with a cliff-hanger, when one of the multiple main characters (in different places) faced different precarious situations unresolved at the chapter's end, was diabolical. To learn more of a particular outcome or development, you needed to read another several chapters, each one of which may end with a cliff-hanger itself, to see what next happened to a particular character. This kept the perpetual motion machine turning. Depending on the edition, the book was 900-1000 pages. This and its story completing sequel, War and Remembrace (even longer) are certainly 2 titles on my personal All Time Top 5. After the first one, I learned how to be patient with the cliff hangers - my health was suffering from lack of sleep! ;-)

My approach to reading is also very much the same as TV’s. The exception is a book that has really captured my interest. Then I spend as much time as I can reading the book so I can know how it ends. I do love to read in bed at night so I do have a clip on book light which has variable light levels. I use it often. If I’m wanting to read and my husband has his light out, I can read without casting light on him. And, if I wake up too early I can stay in bed and read without waking him. I developed the love of reading in bed as a child. The difference was then I was using a flash light & hiding under the covers hoping my parents wouldn’t catch me — “turn out your light - it’s a school night!” 🔦📖

When I'm finished I check out what else that author has written.

I logged on this morning and found all these new-to-me names! I thought I had walked into the wrong house for a minute until I saw Vee had posted!

The last book I read that gripped me was during one of my wakeful nights period so I was glad to have something to fill in the time on and off before I breakfasted and napped again.

I tried the authors other books but the first one I read was the best.

I read quickly and everything at the same pace, but I will stay up late to finish a really good one. Fortunately, I'm retired.

I read it as I would any other book choice, but will look forward to getting back to it when I feel like reading. Since I have creative interests which I enjoy, a good book is just going to be a plus to my day, not an obsessive read !

If I love a book and it's suspenseful, I read as long as I can--sometimes to the end late at night. If it's not suspenseful, then I slow down--but not too much. Earlier this year, I read The House of Mirth. Edith Wharton's writing was so brilliant that I tried to slow down and savor her language but my desire to know what happened to Lily Bart was so strong that I couldn't. A book to read again--slowly.

Like Annpan, I was surprised to find so many new names on here (welcome to you all!). I find that if a book grabs my attention, I want to get through it as fast as I can, to find out how it ends. However, if I really like it a lot, I have been known to go back and reread it more slowly so I can savor the experience.

I read at the same pace. The rest of my world gets put on hold. And I read.

Welcome newbies! Happy to "see" new names!

I don't know.I've always read anytime I could since age 5. Under the covers with a flashlight when I was supposed to be sleeping. Currently I am reading two different books on two different KIndles. I am also reading a paper book on horse training. I don't speed read nor am I a slow reader. I stay engrossed in my book world throughout my busy days. Kindle or a book is always with me.

Wild - I also read more than one at a time! I am more of a physical book person and don't use a kindle much. But there is always an upstairs book, a downstairs book, a fiction, a non-fiction, and a car book, sometimes also history. You can never have too many!!!

I try to limit myself to one chapter to slow it down. Instead of one chapter per day, it becomes, one chapter "for now" (and another and another and another... later).

For me, how I read depends on the type of book. With non-fiction, I am more likely to slow down and make sure I am catching all the info along the way. With fiction, especially plot-driven fiction, I read as fast as I can, sometimes even skipping, but when I've reached the end of a book I particularly liked, I immediately turn back to the first page and start it all over again.
