A few goodbyes (pics)
Comments (17)Thanks for the positive feedback, I tend write... err... montages... When I'm stressed out. This has been along time coming. When I bought my house it was for the neighborhood not for the kitchen. (Or the bathroom for that matter but that was before I knew about Gardenweb.) It's about a quarter of a mile from the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, MN. It's a great location. (Eagles play in my backyard... Frickin' eagles.) The big renovation started last fall with the garage, which we completely ripped out, concrete and all. You can see it some of my flickr pics with the Tyvek wrap still on it and my '47 Willys... (I'm sure the neighbors are thanking me for that.) Now the kitchen, which moves a patio door, which means a new deck, which is going to force me to re-landscape the whole back yard. And somewhere in there I'm going to put a new roof on it. Which means taking off the chimney, which leads to a new hot water heater. (The furnace is already new and already vents out the side.)...See MoreThe Last Dinner Party
Comments (12)Chicagoans & rtorgy1 -- this roast cauliflower and chick pea recipe goes great with the pork! pllog -- I'll pine for your new sink (my old sink . . .) and you can be jealous for a bit over mine (like that would happen, with your TDF digs). I went to see if I had any old pictures of that kitchen and our 5 holer Kohler -- we do, but it's when we were bathing our daughter in it -- she's about a week old. Obviously the picture really was about her, and not the sink. DARN! what was I thinking, focusing on the baby, not the sink? Tonight we had a wonderful time and laughed so much about our teen agers . . . . you gotta laugh or cry, luckily our kids we can still laugh over. It's true, it's not about the surroundings the food is prepared in, it's the pleasure about preparing and sharing it with others. But then, when DH and I were doing the clean-up, and not everything was fitting into the DW, I knew what he was thinking -- "Maybe we should rethink that second DW . . . ." But nope, it just took me a few more minutes to handwash those serving pieces that wouldn't fit in. I'll use another drawer stack more often than a second DW. Comments (42)I really enjoyed reading your reveal. Read it on my iPad this morning lazing in bed and pored over it for a good 1/2 hour. It was more engaging than a book, lol. I totally LOVE your new kitchen, and this is one of the best reveals I've seen. Enjoyed reading the goals you had for the new kitchen, seeing how all your choices came together, the peeks inside your drawers and doors, and reading about the things you decided that others might consider crazy. Not crazy at all! The whole point of doing the research is to consider the alternatives and then choose what works for YOU. While I might not have made all those same decisions, you wouldn't have made the ones I chose either. That's rather the point, right? You don't live in my kitchen and I don't live in yours, LOL. There is something very freeing about deciding what works for you and just going regardless of trends. And I totally get where you're coming from on the slide in range with glass top. I've had a glass top range in the past and really liked it. Not everyone needs or wants a spendy induction or gas range so I say good for you!! Things I particularly admire: The new layout moving the fridge wall and getting a wider opening. The great new views from your sink and peninsula area -- what a difference that makes. Your drop-dead gorgeous cabinets! Your lovely granite. Drawers and the use of space -- the mostly 4-drawer bases without a lot of stacking was a wise choice. The new fireplace wall (wow, what a difference the black paint makes). And a small thing, but I like that you carried the toekick past the dishwasher, it looks really nice. Great job. Enjoy your new kitchen and may it bring you many years of new and happy memories!...See MoreKitchen layout help needed!
Comments (13)Thanks mama goose. You've given me some things to think about. I like the fridge placement. I am concerned about the depth of the island though. At 42" deep, I'm worried there won't be enough clearance behind the island to have a couch/tv at a comfortable distance. I was trying to leave enough space to walk behind the couch to get to the slider/fridge and just generally to have the couch not too close to the TV. The interior width of the house is 23'. So between back wall of cabinets, island, and aisles (26+48+42+48) I would be looking at the back of the couch being a little over 9 feet to a wall mounted TV. i don't mind a cozy living space but that seems like it might be too tight? We currently sit about 13-15 feet away from the TV (which is 55") and some seating is even farther away. Getting a functional kitchen with a comfortable family area was my biggest struggle when making up this current plan. I'm sorry for the poor quality of the photos/sketches. I'm working from my phone right now as I await delivery of a new laptop It's pretty frustrating. The grip I used is 6" per tiny box, if that helps. Once I get the computer I want to try some digital floor plans. I welcome any feedback. Thanks so much for your plan. I already feel better about the kitchen layout at least...See Moresatine_gw
