A few goodbyes (pics)

Excuse me... I have to say a few goodbyes.

Goodbye old, stained, chipped nasty formica.

Goodbye worthless range hood that that's been cleaned so much it's losing its "stuff" and only seemed to spread grease around my kitchen. So I never used you.

Goodbye green, foamy, plastic backsplash of dubious origin. I will never have to wash your hideous nooks and crannies again.

Goodbye cabinet door that never really closed. I will never bang my knee on you again while making myself an omelet. That was never a nice thing to do early in the morning.

And your friends the broken drawers that always hung off of they're tracks.

And goodbye to all the rest of you. The parts of my kitchen that made you no fun to work in, had me avoiding company, and harshing my mellow. (There are to many of you to mention all of you. Interested parties can click back to flickr to get an idea of how many aggravating and ugly parts of you there were.)

I'm saying goodbye because you have finally left me for "Old Blue", the dump truck that will carry you off to the landfill site, where you will still be ugly, polluting the world with your ugliness until nature finally reclaims you... But for now, I no longer have to look at you.

Good job picking up that Frithia pulchra! They've been showing up recently for the first time in my area. I bought all 4 the first week, then all 4 the second week, (I always get multiples for seed production) so now I have 8 and mine are flowering too. The flowers are taking a long time to open so be patient. Yes, they have similar care to Lithops and other Mesembs but they seem to like to stay moist, being from the grasslands. Also, they seem to prefer more shade than other Mesembs. Some sun won't hurt but I would give it the same amount of light as you would a Haworthia or Gasteraloe, limited sun, bright indirect light. Keep it from turning pink. If the leaves feel soft to the touch, it needs a little drink but don't soak it, just a sip. The condition you describe of your Gasteraloe sounds like it had too much sun, dried out, maybe the roots had died off. You seem to have revived it nicely so just keep doing what you're doing. Some plants have an actual dormant period and some just grow better at certain times of year. I personally only change up my routine for Haworthias, Aeoniums and Mesembs. Everything else does fine with regular watering year-round. Eventually, you'll learn to read the plants and react accordingly instead of following set rules.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back and check in. I was out of town for work and just got home. Thanks so much everyone for the compliments. It makes me feel good, I must admit. I always seem to see what needs to be done, and sometimes forget to look at what it is! I will try to answer everyone's questions. Hope I don't miss any. In no particular order... The lilies in the "big" picture are almost all daylilies. The lilies in the close-up pictures I am not sure. Just some bulbs I picked up, probably at a big box store or the local garden center? Sorry I don't have their names. The rose pictured in the 4th picture is Morden Belle. There are actually 3 bushes planted in that bed. I hope that is the rose you meant? Yes, I do have the courtyard of roses and yes they are blooming. However, many of the roses on the fence were taken down this year due to RRD. I have planted bittersweet in their place. Won't be the beautiful flowers, but will provide privacy that won't get RRD. As you can see from the picture below, the fence is now pretty bare looking on the side. I have decided that I will try to keep the roses on the fence across the end and around the corner. The need for privacy there is not so great, as the Wine and Roses weigela in the island bed does screen most of the garden from that end. Again, thank you everyone! You've got a lot of space up there, the plates with kids' handprints would look cute and homey (but not country cluttered like before), the apothecary jars sound great too. But I'm not one for putting stuff up where I can't get to easily to dust, but can still see the dust (and glass jars would show it). If you want to do crown on the cabinets, you can order it from the cabinet manufacturer, or you could put real oak up there. That's what I'm doing - forget how much it was at HD, but it's pretty easy to match the color, it looks like a Natural (pretty colorless) stain, maybe a touch of Cherrywood gel if you need it redder, on red oak would match your cabinets. They look the same color as mine, here's what I did (molding not all stained and up yet - have been working on other things in the house). Island cabinets - added oak b/t upper and lower cabinets and in front of recessed cabinet (bathroom vanity) Before After (Natural on red oak, 1 coat brushed on semigloss waterbased poly, 2nd coat brushed on and then wiped off excess) Added oak shoe to hide gap at wall - again, just Natural stain and water-based (wiped on a thick coat) poly - sorry this is the best photo I had showing the shoe and cabinets together, I think I got the color and gloss (semigloss) pretty close Added a piece above and below fridge cabinet to fill gaps (cabinet had been placed with 6" gap under it, we lowered 3" and filled the gaps, will be adding crown). This is only red oak with Natural stain, no poly yet (will poly when do the crown). The idea (not to go all the way to ceiling, except for over fridge and corner cabinet that are higher). Mockup not stained. Since you already have crown on wall, you want to keep your cabinet crown lower too. HTH

Goodbye indeed!! I didn't give my worn out kitchen much of a send off...pretty much just kicked it to the curb. I can't wait to hear your greeting to the new kitchen!

I see you have an old house that someone cut holes in from the outside to blow in insulation. Of all the demo work, dealing with that stuff was one of the worst IMO. I was never so glad when I got the last bag of it hauled out of the house.

Thanks for the positive feedback, I tend write... err... montages... When I'm stressed out.

This has been along time coming. When I bought my house it was for the neighborhood not for the kitchen. (Or the bathroom for that matter but that was before I knew about Gardenweb.) It's about a quarter of a mile from the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, MN. It's a great location. (Eagles play in my backyard... Frickin' eagles.)

The big renovation started last fall with the garage, which we completely ripped out, concrete and all. You can see it some of my flickr pics with the Tyvek wrap still on it and my '47 Willys... (I'm sure the neighbors are thanking me for that.) Now the kitchen, which moves a patio door, which means a new deck, which is going to force me to re-landscape the whole back yard.

And somewhere in there I'm going to put a new roof on it. Which means taking off the chimney, which leads to a new hot water heater. (The furnace is already new and already vents out the side.)
