Milgard or Jeld-wen all aluminum windows?
Comments (15)I was looking at the A 500 Premium aluminum and it is limited to the SW states. Maybe the Atlantic aluminum has thermal breaks, but I'm buying for the South West. I have asked about the thermal break but I've yet to talk to a rep that knows all about these and I can not get a corner sample. I was told they have it but it is not listed in the brochure and apparently not on the drawing so likely they don't. I got one quote on Jeld-wen aluminum and they did not list the model and haven't answered me on that. I'm looking for other options still. I'm calling Fleetwood tomorrow, they look good on their website. All the aluminum clad wood have pesticides and fungicides on them, I don't want pesticides 2 inches from my head, thus looking for all aluminum....See Moreall aluminum or aluminium-clad wood windows for craftsman style home
Comments (12)To me your house looks more modern than craftsman, and I think aluminum windows would be a fine match. That said, I'm a fan of fiberglass, as well (it's what we're using). If you don't like the look of the Marvin, perhaps check out the new Kobe fiberglass option....See MoreWhat type of window for lots of thermal movement & settling?
Comments (5)1) I'd second oberon's question 2) there is nothing inherent about vinyl that would make it any worse in terms of seal failures, despite some of the propaganda that is out there. If anything, vinyl windows are engineered to accommodate for more expansion and contraction/movement than just about any other window material. With that said, you shouldn't deal with seal failures due to building movement in a window of any material. There are a lot of parts to move around between the foundation and wall framing before getting to the IGU which is sealed independent of the sash frame in the vast majority of windows. It so happens that there are a lot of crappy, cheap, builder grade vinyl windows on the market which don't paint a great picture, but a good window that is vinyl, wood, or fiberglass should serve you just fine regardless. Just be sure to pick a quality product to mitigate seal failures....See Morewhite vinyl windows/aluminum sliding doors
Comments (10)I lived in LA and had several fires in the area in the 10 years we lived there. The most amazing videos were of the houses that just started smoldering out the roof eaves. Embers got blown into the houses through attic vents and started the fire in the attic, which quickly spread to the rest of the house. The type of windows and doors made no difference. Sorry you've had to deal with this. Hopefully you won't have to deal with mudslides too. In my area we had more damage from the mudslides after the hills above the town lost all their vegetation to the fires. I would find a different brand of sliding doors and get it in white, to match the windows. The difference between window and doors of a different brand in the same color, will be less that having them in the same brand, but a different color....See Moresnowcountry
