Pella & Jeld-Wen Windows @ Lowe's & Home Depot
Comments (11)I am a door and window dealer. Home Depot and Lowes will usually sell stock items for less than I am willing. If the item is special order I can easily beat their price, but more importantly I go to the jobsite and I confirm dimensions and code compliance for no additional cost. Windows and doors can be very complex and expensive and they cannot be returned. This is an area where unless you have had a bad expierence you cannot fully appreciate the value of that service. If the cost from a window specialist is even close to HD or Lowes it's a no brainer. After all if you can't trust them to mix paint correctly how can you expect them to understand Egress codes, Jamb widths, Sight lines, DP ratings, Solar Heat Gain, Structural mulls, flashing details or Temper codes. All of these details must come together in order to ensure a proper fit not just in the opening but in reference to the application. Vinyl windows are not as tricky but they still require more knowledge than their employees usually have. The simple rule of thumb for the big box stores, if you know exactly what you need and where to find it on the shelf, buy it and you probably saved some money. Comments (18)Milgards Fife Wa. operations is only 20 miles from our build. Our homes window package was substantial. Thier latest way of dealing with things after a year is to simply not return calls and fall back on thier vendor agreement to make the vendor eat it, who are seeing through this and tired of it. They (Milgard) no longer deal direct with the consumer except for large outside sales jobs. They no longer do residential installation either. They would be dealing with attorneys and bad publicity on the large jobs if they do not put a better foot forward. Our windows came with very bad anodizing. It was as if the alloy was never prepped. Holes for the casement mechanism mounts were drilled completey through the windows frame and directly through the nailing flange. Nailing flanges were specced and not delivered. Custom glass styles came scratched. When delivered No notice was given (though noted) and they weres simply left on the job site twice. Once they even lost a door in transit! Structure was damaged because of delivery guys not paying attention. Hardware was loose and missing screws on casement windows. They bocked at everything. They have been horrible with the vendor as well and hide behind thier new vendor agreements. They have eluded and hid from this for over a year. Comments (4)At the risk of getting lambasted again by all the anti Pella people on here, my choice would not be either one of Jeld-Wen or Bonneville. I prefer Pella hands down the service in this area for Jeld-Wen and Bonneville in this area is non existent.The quality of the windows is fair at best, and depending on series being used Pella can be comparable in price. Lead time on the Pella is running about 3 weeks. Just my ever so humble opinion. I know there will be those who come out of the woodwork to slam Pella, but I have been installing them for many years and never had a major problem, when a problem does arise such as a broken balance or a stress crack, I have never had a problem in getting service out to take care of it...See MoreMarvin vs Jeld-wen, wood vs. clad, painting aluminum
Comments (5)Re: Painting aluminum, most reps I talked to say it voids the warranty, b/c you have to sand the aluminum to get the paint on, apparently and that interferes with the finish, so it voids the warranty on their finish, whatever that means. I have widened the possibilities to Eagle, Loewen, Pella's Architect and Marvin. Pella was too expensive for what I wanted. The rest were competitive in price, even though it had to be custom size for Eagle and standard for Marvin and Loewen. Pella had to be custom, so I am assuming that's why it was so expensive. Marvin also has a shorter lead time of 4-6 weeks vs Eagle and Loewen had to be 8-9 weeks. So, I am inclined to go with Marvin, but I haven't seen any of these windows in person yet, so I am worried about looking at just one and deciding. 5 years agoAll-aluminum windows are not very energy efficient unless they have thermal breaks which makes them expensive so they are typically found on commercial projects.
Here are the details of the Jeld-Wen A500 single hung. Mullions are only between the glass. One sash is smaller than the other like many vinyl windows.
