Lightening up a dark kitchen: Paint suggestions
Comments (11)Very true--I know there are a lot of whites out there. I do like the look of all white kitchens and the possibilities of having a very neutral wall to work with for artwork/window treatments. I don't think I would want to try to match the cabinets, and I am wondering if it is possible to introduce a warmer white. The "Grey Orchard" floor tile does have a lot of color variability--it is not a flat gray. The Pratt & Lambert Nickel reminds me of Sherwin Williams Evening Shadow, maybe? A gray that reads like a blue in certain light? I have that in my bedroom and bath in my non-beach home and love it....See MoreHow to Lighten Up A Dark Stairway Entrance
Comments (14)Since it's an apartment, I'm guessing there's not much you will be allowed to do. First, I would clean the carpet (Ideally, call someone in to do it as stairs are a beast to do and it will be worth the money). You don't have any width to do much here, so what about something like this that you can wrap around the door/wall and and up the stairs a little? They're vinyl decals and easy to remove and are kind of cute. My favorite color-of-the-day is red, so I would say have it done in red to brighten up the area. I would also get a red door mat that coves in front of the door.. This one: https://www.amazon.com/Anti-Bacterial-Non-Skid-Interior-Decorative-Home/dp/B00TMAONLQ/ref=sr_1_21?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1503778753&sr=1-21&refinements=p_n_feature_twenty_browse-bin%3A2972994011 is thin enough that the door won't catch on....See MoreHow would you lighten this dark area up?
Comments (17)Kathi Steele, it seems like our comments crossed. I do have white washing in mind. I think I also got the answer about what the surround is that functionthenlook also suggests painting. Black is a good idea. It's not very big, maybe 15 x 15. I don't think we've figured out what to use it for exactly. It looks like a den, but we won't be putting a screen up anywhere. We do want to use the fireplace. So it will probably just be an extra chill-out sit-down space for reading/listening/chatting or alone time for two or three people at a time. There's a much bigger, brighter open space to the left where all the light is coming from where I expect bigger groups to gather for parties and such....See MoreHow to lighten up a cottage that’s all knotty pine throughout?
Comments (21)Pretty much all the houses in my neighborhood have knotty pine somewhere. Most did eventually paint over successfully, but if it's real knotty pine you need to know what you are doing or there will be bleed through. in our master, there's knotty pine but the original owners did a dark matter strain (no shiny orangey) and I've grown to love it. I've also grown to like the typical knotty pine in the living room, but only bc the light is great in there and we have hung big paintings on the wood walls 😉. seriously, we may end up keeping it when we remodel, but we aren't 100% sure. knotty pine cabinets in kitchen will eventually go when we remodel. don't like those and never will. so my point is that as you relax and live in your space, you might be surprised at how your perspective changes. I am....See MoreHeather Kooren
