9 More Ways to Lighten Up Your Design
Summer is the Perfect Time to Relax and Have Fun with Your Decor
Well, it's been almost six months since I told everyone to lighten up and stop worrying so much about their decor. If you're in the middle of a renovation or are so overwhelmed that you cannot even start to make your design plans, you are probably suffering from design overload. You've lost perspective. All of the sudden, you're thinking that the fate of the free world rests upon which door handles you choose. IT DOESN'T. Worst case scenario is you don't like them, and you replace them and donate them to Re-Store. Lighten up! Here are some photos I hope will help.
Display images of your favorite places. It doesn't have to be an image from a trip to Machu Picchu; just because this glorifies corn dogs it doesn't mean it's not art.
Supersize it! For some reason the peek of the gigantic rubber ducky in this picture makes the theme song from Jaws go through my head and then I start to giggle.
Let your freak flag fly. This pillow does NOT pass my mother's "what if your child's teacher came over for tea?" test. Guess what? She's not coming over. Use whatever pillows you wish. Personally, I like Disco Lady.
Embrace the rodents? Just kidding! Let's try Look at everyday objects in a new way instead! I think it's pretty hilarious that these people have a giant mousetrap image hanging on the wall in the room where they prepare food. Rodents gross me out so much that I never noticed how great the graphics on those traps are.
Don't banish all of the toys to a box. Look closely among the perfectly composed arrangement of vases, photographs and books – there's an unidentified foreign object in the top right corner.
Display your favorite song or quotation. This bathroom for kiddos has a sweet song stenciled over the sink. Another way to do this is to stencil your favorite saying directly onto the wall.
Bathroom humor is acceptable I've said it once and I'll say it again: it's alright to get a little cheeky over the toilet. I imagine a stare like this from Audrey would make the guys a little shy.
Use accessories in unexpected ways. I love an animal trophy that isn't an actual animal head. Putting it in a gold frame that's fit for an antique mirror or painting is a nice twist.
I think I'm going to take it upon myself to remind everyone to lighten up twice a year; getting ready for summer is the perfect time to relax and have some fun with your home. Please let us know how you have fun with your home.
