my staircase is a disaster! please I need help
Comments (45)Lots of comments about the shiplap, which is the least of your worries, but I do have one suggestion! If you like the shiplap, continue it up the wall of the stairs. I think it’s amazing how the railing really shifted the stairs from appearing as a mistake to something intentional. It really looks great. Are you concerned about the space because you intended to place something like a table between the island and the stairs? It would be really hard for me to justify such a huge change so late in the game when it really looks great, but hearing you clarify that the changes to the stairs also impacted other parts of the floor plan we can’t really see from the pictures is rough. If this is the home you plan to stay in for many years, and you can swing it financially knowing it won’t add value to the home, I can see why you would consider it. I would be more concerned with underestimating how much time it would take to make those changes....See MoreNeed some SERIOUS help with my exterior... disaster.
Comments (56)Like the idea of some third party coming over and pointing out some deficiencies and then just "ask what s/he meant by that" and that s/he was fairly adamant that these subs were not doing your build justice. By focusing on the subs, you can give MIL an out. How active is she at the site? Is it possible that she's simply not seen this? or is this a new crew from her usual folks, etc? Is your bank giving you draws? is their inspector someone that you can work with? or your banker? I have a good relationship with the inspector that is working for my bank. If he holds up a draw because the work isn't done (or is done VERY WRONG) things will get real and you'll HAVE TO address them - or else no one gets any money. That might be the most direct way. You have to address these - if you don't - even for the sake of "family peace" - it will rot your relationship like the water intrusion will rot your house....See MoreNeed help with this disaster exterior paint job / colors
Comments (55)I'm with those that think the house looks pretty. Perhaps a little mintier than you were aiming for, but pretty. There have already been some excellent suggestions re: some different greens to try if budget allows, however, if it doesn't . . . Definitely simplify the base of the pillars to the creamy trim colour, but leave the little hit of rusty red at the tops of the columns or they will look like they're missing something like your upper windows look now. That will keep the sash colour further away from the brick stairs which is good because it is a bit too "clean" relative to the brick and is making it look old. That said, I like the natural brick and would not paint it unless absolutely necessary. If the stairs have to be painted for some reason, I would make the colour more like the side walk which is a decent match to the roof, both of which are more orange than the reddish brick. Your roof is very visible and the "tongue" effect created by the walk and stairs visually grounds the house as it is now with them being similar in colour. And yes, foundation plantings will also help the house "settle"....See MoreNeeding help with cabinet paint disaster!!
Comments (8)You have a compatibility issue of your topcoat not adhering to your Kilz, or the Kilz not adhering to your liquid sanding agent. Peeling in sheets means no adherence and/or the base coat was not cured. You don't mention what paint type you used, but I assume its water-based latex or equivalent. You are going to have to start over, what you have now will never be satisfactory nor can you fix it. Pull your doors and drawers, and buy a sander, I really like my Makita Orbital, these work better than the rectangular units and the dust bag will help considerably when you have to sand the frames in the kitchen itself. Do all the rest outside and make sure you buy lots of sandpaper discs as your uncured paint is going to clog them. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-3-Amp-5-in-Corded-Random-Orbital-Sander-BO5030/203231614?mtc=Shopping-B-F_D25T-G-D25T-25_9_PORTABLE_POWER-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-PortablePower_PLA&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D25T-G-D25T-25_9_PORTABLE_POWER-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-PortablePower_PLA-71700000034127218-58700003933021540-92700053252310110&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwZPKrueL6gIVD4rICh2YbgBqEAQYBSABEgJl_fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Once you have everything fully sanded, its time to paint. You don't need to put down a primer, that may have compatibility issues as we discussed. I would recommend you rent or buy an airless sprayer, this will make your life so much easier than brush painting. Two coats should do it. I just posted a tutorial on painting a piece of furniture, same methods apply. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5940122/quick-refinish-of-painted-windsor-bench#n=1 When you get everything back together, let the paint season for about ten days, it should not feel tacky. Then apply a very thin coat of wiping poly over it all, this will give your paint a layer or protection against chipping. I just re-vamped my master bath two months ago, changed the shower door and all the hardware / lights to satin nickel, then painted and poly'ed over the cabinets which were stained maple, they came out great. You have to get out the sandpaper is the key. Good luck....See Moreroxanna7
