Fourth of July Party Goodies

Hi everyone,

I am going to my friend's farm with him and his family for a Fourth of July celebration on the day before (when they always celebrate). I'll be making my lemonade (with an orange added to it-might get a lime or two, depends on how they look and smell), and a batch of deviled eggs.

It occurred to me that I have never shared my deviled egg recipe, so here it goes:

Deviled Eggs

12 eggs, hard boiled and sliced in half vertically

1/2 cup mayo

2 tsp. Dijon mustard

2 tsp. cream style horseradish sauce ( I like Inglehoffer's, but use whatever you like or have available)

2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, to taste (about a teaspoon or so)

Paprika and fresh chopped chives for garnish.

Mash egg yolks from hard boiled eggs with fork, spoon or with mixer. Add mayo, mustard, horseradish, Worcestershire, salt, pepper, garlic & onion powders and mix thoroughly until creamy. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking. Fill egg whites with spoon or pipe using piping bag/Ziploc bag with a bottom corner cut off. Sprinkle with paprika and chives (if desired). Refrigerate for several hours or overnight and serve. Makes 2 dozen halves.

I like the idea of adding a little horseradish to the eggs. I may have to try that the next time I make deviled eggs! Thanks for the recipe!

Val - Anastasia doesn't have a lot of buds for me, probably because it doesn't get full sun. But it has always rebloomed even with only 5 hours of sun a day. Celeste - Sweet Sugar Candy is that true of a pink for me. When I first got it, it looked peachy. But after a couple of years it settled in, and it was more true pink. It seems to be the pinkest when the temperatures are in the 90s. I doubt that you get into the 90s much where you live. It's supposed to have a great bud count too when planted in full sun. Mine is in part shade because the neigbors planted some very big shrubs and trees next to my daylily border, so I have only 12-14 buds. Debra

We are having a pig roast at the park where Denny works... Our pastor and his brother are spending the night in the park and cooking the pig...We are all bringing a side dish and deserts and other meat if we don't want to eat the pig. The plan is to eat at noon. Then later in the day my kids will be coming over...Carri, my middle daughter is bringing a friend and her hubby and kids...So we have about 20 there with fireworks...It should be a fun day. patti

Just had beef raviolis with pasta sauce & parm. cheese for a late lunch. They were frozen, but really good tasting. Doubt if I could do any better from scratch. Also had three fresh apricots from the tree I planted about a year & a half ago. Went out yesterday & bought two more apricot trees from the nursery, & am in the midst of planting those now. I love apricots, but have been disappointed with those purchased from farmer's markets or fruit stands until I found the Royal Blenheim. All others are second or third rate to that species, but it doesn't travel well, hence difficult or even impossible to purchase on the market.

You guys never cease to amaze me. I worked. You'd be surprised at how many people celebrate the 4th with Tex-mes. I mean Tex-Mex. Yup. Mex, not Mes. Just got back online after a week without a computer. Longest week in my life since I went online in 1988. Yup. 1988. Absolutely roto-routed my system with a Blackberry phone app (dropped old phone in potty, activated a new, 2-year old phone) which deleted all my communication drivers (WiFi, Bluetooth, and even ethernet) and caused my factory installed Windows to claim it was a counterfeit edition. Huh? Although back online, I am really disgusted with the frou-frou Windows 10. Can do very few functional things with it. Grrrr.... But here I am. Hot, sweaty, and online. We're in our first real heatwave.

Thank you, everyone! If y'all try the recipe, let me know how it turns out! I don't devour these, as I only eat two or three at a time (unless I have nothing else to eat, lol).

Here's my gram's lemonade recipe, with the orange added (my own twist). She never wrote her recipes, so I had to tweak it on my own until it tasted just like hers. I also added soaking the lemons (and orange) for 15 minutes after reading a tip in an old household hints book.

Lemonade

4 lemons (use 3 for orange lemonade)

1 orange (optional)

1 1/2 cups sugar

Water

Soak lemons and orange (if using) in hot water for 15 minutes. Drain. Slice thinly into large bowl and cover with sugar. Mash with a potato masher until slushy. Add a little water to bowl to get sugar from sides. Strain into a gallon sized pitcher. Fill with water, cover and refrigerate.

I usually use two pitchers to strain it twice. You could strain it into a bowl and add the juice to the pitcher that way, too.
