Siding and color ideas for a quirky old house!
Moved into this quirky house about 6 months ago.. initially passed on it due to the unusual design, but now it's ours :)
It has skinny 1940s brick on the bottom with board and batten (really board on board) siding on top. The wood siding has seen better days - many boards are split. Beneath the vertical siding is white horizontal tongue and groove siding, presumably in even worse shape.
I'd like to breath some new life into the exterior. Some initial thoughts:
* Paint the siding and garage
* Cut off the siding bottom scalloping and add trim to the bottom edge
* Paint the brick (shame on me, I know)
Since some of the siding boards will need to be replaced, I'm considering new siding altogether, but not sure what kind would look best for the funky geometry of the house.
* True board and batten?
* Horizontal siding?
* Shakes?

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoOh, and storm door is already gone, replacing the solid wood door with this dutch door that I'm refinishing. Work in progress! TBD if it will be painted or natural.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoThe flat roof above the garage bothers me, and I think I finally figured out why. It should be a gable roof! And for that matter.. maybe the entryway needs a gable roof (portico?) as well. Hmm.

Comments (3)Ha! The BB totems are not quite what you're imagining. They are front yard trees that were cut down but 15-20 ft. of the trunk remains. The homeowners have affixed bowling balls (and one has bowling pins also) to the remaining trunk. Tons of them, in every color all around and up the trunk. There is space between the balls. One owner told me that he used lag bolts and gorilla glue to affix them. The owners do NOT even know each other! It might be a little while for pictures. My 17 yr old son's car was broken into and he happened to have the digital camera and it was stolen. I'm watching for a good camera sale. Today I delivered to a house (I'm a ups driver)that used white and red rocks mixed together. One of the houses I mentioned above have the two different colored rocks arranged in diagonal strips - like they were trying to imitate tiger fur. I also think using different colored mulch could be interesting and I wonder if you could spray a neutral mulch with a fence stain and make it any color you wanted. I don't think every idea I see to my taste but they do inspire me so I like them all! Oh, my favorite was the house with HUNDREDS of wind chimes hanging from the porch ceiling. Comments (34)I'd look at a LOT of photos before changing to black windows. The visualization of your home from @Therese N shows it with white windows and either seems to look good. I say this as someone who had to decide how to color the posts on her new porch, and am really glad I almost went blind looking at photos of white, black and wood porch columns. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoCharming project. I would not be adding but perhaps subtracting to get back to the original house. Not sure the shed awning was original but it looks sad and I would remove it before I considered adding anything to this home. Also cut back all the over grown shrubs so you see what you have to work with.
If you have to replace the siding continue with a vertical element to balance the low slung look of the home. However I like the 'dog' ear' scallop detail so I would recommend continuing with what you have. It fits the house.
Unless there is something unusual happening inside your home is not MCM but simply a ranch home with some cottage details..
