How Many Seeds Per Ounce Conversion
Comments (1)Nice link LKZZ. Definitely helps out the people who grow en masse. For the everyday gardener, seeds are definitely the least expensive part of gardening though, in my opinion. Especially if one gets in on the seed swaps here on GW. The most expensive seeds in my experience are the rare(or superhot) pepper seeds. Over 5 bucks for 10 seeds at many sites -- and if you don't know what you're doing, you can find yourself with zero plants out of those 10 seeds. Kevin...See MoreHomeMade Medicinal Tea
Comments (4)The most versatile and easy system for measurements is the simplers method, because it is based on ratios, measurements are referred to as "parts", for instance 3 parts dandelion, 1 part nettle, 2 parts raspberry, is a very common 3:1:2 synergy. This simple way of measurement lets you make your formulation in any volume you wish, whether ounces, tablespoons, cups, liters, grams etc. Herbal tea making is just as much of an art as it is a science. Color, taste, aroma all will signal you when the brew is "just right". Ratio : Pour two cups boiling water over one ounce dried herb, (1 to 2 tablespoons), or 1 cupped handful of the fresh herb. Brewing time : 10 to 20 minutes. Depends on the material. Generally, leaves and flowers will take less time than seeds, roots, or barks. Average Dose. The average dosage is usually 3 to 4 cups in a day. Bitter medicines need only be taken in small doses, usually 1/2 cup at a time. Variations : Spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and allspice add heat and energy to the infusion. Almond and vanilla extracts, raw honey, fresh lemon, or a pinch of stevia add flavor and zest. Tools : You don't need anything fancy, the most important tea tool is a non-aluminum pot with a tight fitting lid. Add a strainer and a tea cup and you are good to go....See MoreMeasuring cups are not accurate
Comments (50)FOAS, I think finer salt would make your recipes much saltier because you'd have a lot more salt in the tsp than you would with kosher salt. Just for fun, now try your experiment with sugar and see what happens. Then measure a tsp of coffee grounds and re measure the same beans after grinding to various degrees. It is more the size of the grains of what you are measuring than anything else, indifferent results. My best friend since sixth grade is a food scientist, so that makes me a know-it-all by virtue of an almost sixty year friendship. ;-)...See More1 ounce of dried porcini mushrooms?
Comments (21)Here's how I make mushroom soup. 1 pound of mushrooms, I usually use half white button and 1/2 baby bellas. 1 yellow onion 4 T butter 4 T flour 1 qt chicken broth 3 oz cream cheese, 1 cup half and half (or milk) 3 Tablespoons dry sherry wine Salt and pepper to taste. Finely chop 8 oz...half...or the mushrooms and the onion. Slice the other 8 oz of mushrooms. Sautee the chopped mushrooms and onion in the butter, when most of the moisture has been cooked out, sprinkle in the flour and over low heat, whisking constantly, add the chicken broth. cover and simmer 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cut the cream cheese into bits and add to the soup, whisking to melt the cheese into the soup ( some store brands of cream cheese never seem to melt and will stay in hard globs, Philadelphia cream cheese always smooths out easily) Add the cream or milk, re heat to serving temperature (do not boil!) add sherry taste for seasoning ( I add no salt, I find the broth is salty enough) I like a generous amount of fresh ground black pepper, and serve.
