Weepy norway spruce fertilizer shock help

Well. I did it. I am guilty guilty. I was so in love with my weeping norway spruce I wanted to treat them with fertilizer spikes and make them even more handsome. About 3 to 4 weeks I placed the spikes and now over 3/4 of the needles have dropped off the plant from top to bottom. I had trouble finding were the spike was but I was able to dig the rest of it out of the ground. Sure enough it was smack dab on top of a root. There is the bottom left quarter that is still very alive and green. My question is if this part keeps doing well over the summer. Any chance next year on clipping away the dead branches and training one of the lower branches to be a new leader? Thanks everyone in advance. I'm so disappointed with my disaster but I don't want to give up hope yet to save it somehow.
