Opening Windows in house.. Should we turn our thermostat/systems OFF?

I've read articles that say you should never turn your system off and That you should always keep it on. Is it bad to turn off the system?

When the temperature outside is a little bit cooler than my thermostat setting I never know what to do when I want to open windows in my house. For example. It has been 50-55 degrees all day where I live. I love weather like this. Its nice and cool and the air is fresh. So I like to have a couple windows open in my house. I love fresh air. But since the temperature is lower outside than my thermostat is set to....the heat keeps kicking on to warm up my house. Should I turn the thermostat OFF? Or should I turn the temperature down a few degrees?

The same can be said when its warmer out and I have the AC on. If its 80 degrees out and just wanna open the windows.... and my thermostat is set to 70 degrees.... Do I shut the system off?
