A/C won't turn off with thermostat temp adjustment - Goodman

System won't turn off with thermostat temp adjustment ( Goodman system)

Furnace is a Goodman GMP-075-3 1998

A/C condensing unit is a Goodman 2 ton 10 SEER unit 1998

It is now the middle of a hot summer . The system is cooling fine but a problem has developed where the A/C condensing unit and fan stay on regardless of the thermostat setting . I can only tun it off by placing the switch thermostat in the off position (between heat and cool ) . I suspect that is probably a bad control board or thermostat . How do i diagnosis this further (and repair) ? - Thanks

If it didnÂt turn off when you shut down stat, I would say the problem is probably elsewhere. However, since you can manually turn it off at the stat and it shuts down, time for a new stat.

Also, if stat uses batteries try changing them first.

I should mention or ask, you say it doesnÂt shutdown with temp setting, are we talking with in less than a minute or never?

Some T-stats have delays, preset cycle periods, temp degree setting lags and so on. This can be normal and the unit can run past the set point 1-2 degrees and up to 10 minutes or so. This can happen on inexpensive stats & improper installation setup parameters.

If it never shuts off or indoor blower stops with outdoor unit still running, then you do need a new stat.

Even though mine does what the OP wants, I do not endorse Rite Temp thermostats for a couple of reasons. On mine, the display cycles mindlessly between the time and the temperature, time and temperature, ad nasuseum. There is no way to turn this particular bit of studpidity off. It also doesn't remember the restart retard setting during power failures. If the power is on, the unit waits five minutes between starts. This helps to prevent compressor damage, especially with older (non scroll) compressors. However, this useful feature doesn't work if the power fails, which is when an unwanted restart is most likely to occur. Why they didn't program the unit to do this is beyond me. It is such an obvious requirement for an intelligent thermostat. In short, this will be my last Rite Temp thermostat.

It is possible that your setting (low to mid 60's) is causing the coil to freeze, and shutting down on safety. This could explain why the unit needs to 'rest' for 40 minutes, in order for the ice to melt. Leaving your window open at night allows the night time humidity to infiltrate your apt. Leaving the a/c off all day allows the heat to build up. Both heat and humidity put a burden on your a/c which has to be satisfied before you feel comfortable. Being that your apt is 550 sq ft, the unit could be oversized which will result in frequent short cycling (less humidity removal). Try minimizing opening of your windows at night (unless outside humidity is low) and leaving your a/c on while away, although at a higher setting. You need to experiment. V

how short is short for the fan run time. does the outdoor unit run till the inside temp of the house is satisfied? They way the heatpump works is the outdoor unit is your primary heat and should run till the stat reaches temperature. and the aux. heat is electric heatstrips inside of your home where the fan is and should only run if the temp in your home is 2* lower than your stat. or unless it is very cold outside and ice buildup is on your outdoor unit. now if your outside unit is not running the whole time until your thermostat satisfies, then try running it in cooling mode for 5 min. and watch and see what happens. Also is this a hybrid unit, meaning gas and electric heat?> and how are you manually shutting off the fan, from the stat or power source?

Well that can be a blessing and a curse... warranty repairs are the least desirable of jobs and even more so for equipment that company 'b' didn't put in. Company 'b' doesn't have anything to gain. A tech gets paid less to do warranty work. Time is money, not only for the company involved but also the tech they send. Because their company didn't install the equipment, this will likely give you the feeling of getting a run around. This type of mentality is very common in my area of service... I've never run service in Florida, but I suspect it will be quite similar. Plan on getting a run around going this route and it very well could wind up being just as bad or worse than what you've already experienced with your current service provider. With that said, I'm different because if you live in Katy, Texas I won't send you a tech. I will come myself. In many cases that is a huge difference.

I never shuts down with temp setting at all ( both fan and outdoor unit) .

One person on another forum suggested disconnecting the green thermostat wire . He told me that the control board was bad if it still ran . I tried that and it did still run.

A thermostat is inexpensive and easy to get but I would like
get it right the first time . Could ou please expand on this some more .

zl700 you were correct ! Before hunting parts , I swapped thermostats with an identical system that services the lower level of my house and it works properly . I will replace both thermostats with a couple of new Honeywell digital thermostats . I still wonder what that green wire procedure was suppose to tell me .

Green is fan.
I would of suggested the red if I thought that was it.

But boards don't fail with closed relays.
