There is also some indications that the 14 day composting is not quite long enough to kill any "weed" seeds that may be there, so that only means more care in what goes into that compost is needed. What I have seen, from Cornell Composting and others, is that when "weed" seeds are in the compost they will germinate but because they get no light to grow they die. Many "weed" seeds have been found to be viable even after being composted with 160 degree temperatures. There are some people that talk about "curing" compost but that is not something that needs to be done since when finished the compost is ready to be used....See MoreFunky smelling workout clothes
Comments (27)When you let sweaty items made of sandwiched material (bras) sit in the hamper, mildew and bacteria grow in the middle layer and might not get totally washed out. Strongly salty water kills the odor making bacteria/mold so that is probably why it works. A giant bag of salt at Sam's Club is pretty cheap, so that might be your source of salt. It's too bad chlorine bleach is a no-no for bras as that would kill off everything living in the middle layer. I use hot water and oxyclean and it has been enough for me. Maybe I will pay more attention to the supermarket shelves and see if there is some sort of disinfecting additive that can be added to the prewash (assuming that your model lets you put a prewash in front of the delicate cycle). If I had your problem, I would prewash by hand using a little bit of detergent and gently knead the wet mix into the bra's problem areas. It's your choice to knead solely in your hands or knead on top of a sponge for softer kneading of the fabric. Then toss in the wash without rinsing out. If that doesn't work, I would escalate by diluting some mouthwash and using that to kill germs and sterilize. I would experiment to find an economical ratio of water to that brand of mouthwash. Those prior two methods are easy, but if they don't, I'd try using an antibacterial soap and then rinse out most of the soap that comes out easily as I depend on the washer getting rid of the rest of the soap residue. If you have no antibacterial soap or its killing power is too weak, then try head & shoulders shampoo as the next alternative but that will take extra rinsing out since shampoo has fragrance in it. As antibacterial handsoaps go, they range from the weak 0.1% triclosan to the robust 0.3% triclosan (the cheap handsoap in the commercial cleaning products section of Sam's Club)....See MoreHow to approach neighbors re: horrendous dog poo smell?
Comments (82)What happe to the poo smell? i have two medium dogs and we have a dog run/bathroom at the sid eof our house. old house and again at our new house. we had different levels of pebles of diffe sizes to help drainage. we would not leave poo more than a cou hours but usuall picked up as it happend and sealed in a compost container that is meant to keep smell trapped.. but the pee is a probem. we would use baking soda all over and then spray water. Luckily it wasnt near my neighbours used area. But still i felt bad. our garbage was picked up every two weeks but the compost container really sealed the smell. The baking soda worked but needed to bough in bulk. our dogs refused to go pee/poo on their walks. they would save it for the bathroom when they got home. even if they did tinkle when out, they’d go straight to their bathroom when they got home and finish the job. also laying fresh rocks helped but picking up, spraying down and a lot of baking soda is necessary. and you cant have it near a well used area....See MoreHow do I get my house to smell nice 24/7?
Comments (58)Oakley, I’m glad you got your big dog odor taken care of. When I was reading your notes I thought that maybe you had retrievers. I used to have a lab and they and other working dogs of the retriever variety are likely to smell a bit doggy because of the oil in their coat. Yes it is important to keep up with vacuuming because they shed a lot. You’ll also want to keep your vacuum cleaner emptied because the oily doggy smell can make that reek Recirculate doggy odor, even if you have replaceable bags. The filter was some part of the apparatus gets dusty with dog fragrance. (We have an in-house vac, so the canister is in the garage, so not a problem.) If you have wool or similar fiber carpeting, this can become “doggy” because the oil from the retrievers get onto the fibers. We had friends with golden retrievers and they had large sisal carpets and their home did not smell of their dogs. They were good housekeepers but not fastidious. They were dog lovers and the guy was a duck hunter so his dogs were not roomed often. (With retriever, the oil on their skin that gets into their hair helps keep them warm and buoyant, I believe.) One thing I found that’s a nice fragrance is close. Somehow to scape day project and we’re apparently in my sewing room. It took me a while to figure out where the nice thing clothes smell was coming from until I spotted a few loose clothes. Now I replace them every now and then just a few and it gives a light variable fragrance To that room. As others have suggested, and you said you do this, refresh the air as often as possible by opening the doors and windows and letting a lot of sunlight come in. Be thankful your pups are rolling in rotted seaweed or lobster bait. Your dogs are beautiful!...See Moremelle_sacto is hot and dry in CA Zone 9/
