Comments (46)No need to freak out kim.....you can cut back just about anything.....it is a good practice once your plants have outgrown their planters and are drying out too fast.....my impatiens are becoming little trees and are drinking alot and may start to seperate in cooler months ahead...I will post a photo after I hack the hell out of them and the after they recover....I will be away for a week at the end of the month and everything would be dead when I come back if i didn't reduce them....regular petunias planted on the ground really benefit from heavy cutting back the last of july to avoid getting leggy......I think you should try the flowering kale at this late date for planting in your zone.......and a trailer like creeping jenny or vinca.....if you can find something small in flower like begonias or lobelia at this time of year and you can stuff it in there, do it...........this time of year you can get away with cramming in some plants because they will not have enough season left to be overplanted.......your kale and trailer planted so close to your house should get you to christmas.......another option would be geraniums or marigolds(or both) if you think you need a flowering plant......you could buy some kale put it in the ground, plant geraniums or marigolds for now with a trailer.....and swap them in november.....Kale will look nice to minus 20.......as long as snow does not lay on it you could have it well into january that close to the house, when choosing Kale, try to find some that the stems are not too tall, if they are a little leggy, plant them deep..........I don't believe you posted your supertunia photo kim......lets see what your other containers are doing...See MoreMost useful Kitchen Cabinet add- ons
Comments (20)My favorites after having lived with our kitchen for over 5 years now are the two level cutlery drawers, the pull out can storage, the pull out pantry next to the oven, the Magic corner units and without a doubt the two way trash pullout in the peninsula. What we don't use at all are the two built in cutting boards. I still appreciate the extra deep toe kick drawers but don't know if I would do them again because we have so much more storage than we had before that I'm not sure they were worth the cost. Loving all base cabinets as drawers, vertical DEEP storage above the ovens (way better than above the fridge as these are lower and easier to reach). I don't use pegs to seperate bowls and plates but we did make our own drawer dividers and as they were made to measure what WE have, there is very little wasted space. I got them at Lee Valley. Absolutley the best thing are our extra deep cabinets, 30" lowers and 15" uppers....See MoreWhere Can I Find a Small Hanging Basket
Comments (10)I don't know what it is about that plant but my cat loves to eat it and then she she throws up usually on my bed!!! Grrr. I keep my bedroom door closed now. I have had my palm for over 20 years - the stalk is as skinny as a pencil and nothing I have done over the years has made it grow wider. I have the plant in the corner in the kitchen and because it is so tall I figured Lucy couldn't reach the top of it. How wrong I was - Lucy is like an acrobat trying to get to those fronds. She will do anything including hanging upside down from my curtains to bite the top of the plant. If I don't catch her she eats all the points off the fronds. Every summer I can't wait to get that plant outside. I cut all the top back and the new growth is always beautiful and the plant loves it outside. My palm has done so well outside so now I am faced with a dilemma. My palm had a baby! Sprouting up from the bottom is a beautiful new addition. I have had this plant forever and it has taken this long to get another offshoot. Now what do I do? LOL I can't hang my plant because it is over 3 feet tall. If I bring it in Lucy has easy access because of the new plant growing at the bottom and I don't want to lose it. I have no place to put this plant in my house that Lucy can't get into or where there is enough light. LOL I have to bring this plant and also my Christmas cactus which Lucy loves to eat too inside in the next couple of days. We avoided the frost last night so I have to get it inside or I will lose the plant. I have been worrying about what to do but then today I thought I will go to the hardware store tomorrow and buy some screening or chicken wire to wrap around the base. Won't look so good in the kitchen but will hopefully keep Lucy eating it and throwing up. Darn cat - I received a hostest gift of a bouquet of flowers for my Thanksgiving table and there are pieces of palm in the vase. I woke up the day after finding Lucy had gotten up on the table and knocked the vase of water all over my wooden table just so she could get to that palm frond. I had to blow the hair dryer on the table so I could get rid of the white splotch that spread over the table from the water. I then put the vase of flowers on top of the fridge and she went up there to get to the palm and now I have it in the bathroom and she scratches at the door to try to open it. What is it with that plant and why are cats attracted to it? I have lots of houseplants but Lucy only goes for the palm and Christmas cactus. Chloe doesn't bother with any of them. Good luck with your hanging basket CB - I hope it works for you. LOLOL Anne...See MoreHelp designing living room, hanging artwork, what to add?
Comments (49)BeverlyFLADeziner Peter, some of the advice you receive is not worth anything. ------------- No need for insults. Don't take my word for it. Feel free to look at all the threads that say, I painted my walls gray or purchased a gray sectional or installed gray carpet, what is wrong with my room? The problem is almost always because the gray is fighting with oak floors or tan walls or warm whites. Yes, gray and tans can work together but it takes decorating skill. If you are a decorating novice, make your life easier. Stick with the same color tones. On my screen the sofas show as dark brown. If they are in fact black, a warm dark wall would still help balance and work with the predominant tones in the room....See MoreJAN MOYER
