Keep Vintage Steel Cabinets or Add Cherry Cabinets in Kitchen?
Comments (34)Hello to ALL, So very grateful to ALL of you....these pictures and Ideas are invaluable to us! Like that Tile Back splash, a lot, so classic! sparlekitty - just love your Kitchen, please make a copy and send to me, right away...I mean the real thing!! What are those amazing counter-tops and your floor and your Range, we still are looking for one? Do I SEE a WINDOW above your Range HOOD! This just looks wonderful! TODAY, we were seriously talking about cutting out a Window sized Area, into our WALL above the Range - this is the WALL between the Kitchen and the Dining Room! This would give the Kitchen a direct VIEW out of the front Dining Room Windows and look out to all the trees in the wooded area, across the street!! Also, the front of our new, old house faces SOUTH - so all that lovely light might be very welcome in the long winters, here! Or do you think that we will have enough light from the door into the Dining Room and we should just add more cabinets on the Range Wall? Has anyone cut out part of the wall in one of these 80+ year old houses? Is this really difficult? Yes, we still are giving very serious thought to selecting the Cherry Cabinets for the upper & lower cabinets on both sides that will have a counter-top! You are right, since the Pantry Cabinet and the Frig. Built-ins are already white, trying to match those does not look too great...we tried this week-end, again but were not happy with the white Cabinets that we found at three places! DH really likes the Adel Cabinets from Ikea but we have to try and figure, a layout using their non-custom sizes? Should we just remove the Soffit above our Sink Wall - will the Kitchen, Look Better without the Soffit? And then we can use the 39" Ikea Cabinets, right? Here is another picture of the last corner in the Kitchen - See where the Counter and lower Cabinet is recessed about 6" ? This allows the large old door to close, where the back hallway comes in? We do not want to take down any of the original wood doors, they are just too beautiful to us. And the powder room is across the hallway. You can See the Soffit above and this only goes across the Sink side of the room. Has anyone used Ikea, lately - are these any good, we went to one of their large stores near Cincinnati, today, never been there before, lots of walking and looking! We have always wanted the very simple lines, like you see in the Adel shaker style and this may be the answer to the budget! These are not real Cherry Wood, which we really love - does anyone have any suggestions for finding simple Cherry Wood cabinets at the Most reasonable cost, that have a descent looking finish? We would be happy even if they are nearly natural and even with the lightest of stain - since we have had Cherry many times before and we know that they will darken on their own, in time! Forgot to share that we are going to try and finish the 3 season Sun Room, into an insulated 4 Season Room with new windows and floor - before the weather gets cold here!! So we really need to save money on the kitchen cabinets, we feel that the windows are just as important and we will really miss our Sun Room when we move in less than a month! Every time I think about the count down - I get giddy, scared and excited, all at once! Just like all of you, we are afraid of making a mistake on a big ticket item! This G W and All of you, really keeps our sanity and we are so grateful for ALL of the Ideas that keep us thinking - too easy to get frustrated and we want to stay positive! Thank you all, again, this help is really appreciated - Does anyone think that we should try to Open up the Wall above the Range, how much and how far above the back splash on the Range is good! As you can see from the pictures, there is no Hood above the Range and maybe we can keep it that way since we mostly bake or use the GE Advantium? We will be able to hang the GE Advantium under the cabinet to the left of the sink. Is it better to have the new Opening that will look out to the South or to have the Range hood and extra Cabinets? Cannot figure out how to do both on the same wall - guess we can take the Tall white Pantry Cabinet out of the corner and use in the hallway since it is finished on 3 sides! Then we may be able to make more room for a new Opening - but should the Range be centered on the Kitchen wall? Will try to add these Pictures, Thank You All for looking and helping us to decide! roseofblue...See Morecabinet add ons
Comments (7)I am adding on a bunch of Rev-a-shelf stuff and really love it. I also bought a number of drawer inserts from Merillat's shop. I could be wrong, but I think Merillat might be the same maker as Kraftmaid. Their accessories were cheap to ship and came very quickly. So far, so good. I will say that the R-A-S cutlery inserts are better looking than the Merillat ones, but more $$$. Comments (1)I think it is regional. On Gardenweb, white is very popular. In the suburbs here, distinct off-white and glazes are popular. In the city, dark stains, very dark brown, maroonish, black. Talk to a realtor, and also look at a lot of real estate online, particularly at new construction, houses that say "recently renovated", and houses that look heavily staged....See MoreTo add on or not to add on.
Comments (8)Hi Danielle, Welcome! I'm glad you found us! First, I'm a fellow minimalist. :-) I recently (last January) bought an old 930 sq. ft. manufactured home, where I live with my 30 year old daughter. We are refurbishing/remodeling it from the ground up. This is the fifth house I've owned, but the first one by myself, after I got divorced in 1998. My daughter Joy and I are in the process of becoming certified organizers and we're writing a book, "Minimalism and the art of the lovely home." So it is in that spirit that I say I think you will want some more room as the children grow up. It doesn't have to be another 800 sq ft, in my opinion, especially if you're practicing minimalism. As a child with three siblings and later a mom & wife with three children born pretty close together, I suggest you may really want a second bathroom sooner or later. What works when the children are young may not work as well when they hit the tweens. That doesn't mean you have to do it right now, but if you're going to remodel anyway, it would be cheaper to do it at the same time, rather than do two (or more) separate remodels. I'm not clear on how many bedrooms you have now or where they are located. Does your house have a full basement? If so, are you counting that as part of the 990 sq ft, and how is it being used? I completely see how the remodel the architect is proposing would cost $175,000. Where are you located? The plan has some seriously expensive components. Moving the staircase is a biggie. Moving the washer/dryer is expensive because of the plumbing, and the bathroom addition can be expensive, depending upon where it is located. The other thing to keep in mind is that the architect, builder, and/or GC (general contractor) rarely brings a remodel in under budget. This isn't because they are bad people. It's because once they open up the walls, plumbing, and electrical panel, they must bring it all up to code. It's the law, and it will be inspected. You should have a reserve of at least 20% over the estimated cost of the project. But--I'm not just being negative! I think you can have the things you want at a far lesser cost! As llucy, Desertsteph, and Shades have indicated, the plan leaves something to be desired. I think you would find the proposed layout very frustrating in all the ways you indicated. If it were me, I'd send the architect back to the drawing board. Tell her/him the stairs can't be moved, the mudroom/laundry/family room needs to be next to the kitchen, and the master en suite doesn't have to be that big. A bedroom is not, or should not, be expensive to add on. Do you really need the mudroom to be a family room too? A small, simple laundry room would be less expensive, and you already have (I think) a living room and a dining room. Dining rooms are often underutilized . Could it possibly double as your home office? Just keep in mind that when you move plumbing or electricity, or when you move or remove a load bearing wall or major structure (like stairs), it gets expensive fast. Try to have your bathrooms share a wall, remembering that ceilings and floors count as walls. That would cut the cost. I second llucy' suggestion to X post to the kitchen forum. They can be bossy, but they are mostly well-meaning, and several of them devote a great deal of time to helping people with their floor plans. They are really good at it! Several are actually professional designers and others could be. Also, check in with the plumbing folks. They will tell you the most cost-effective way to relocate the laundry. There are some really great people on the bathroom forum too. Remember--YOU (and your DH) are the boss, not the architect! You tell her or him what the budget is and make them do their job and come up with a plan that works for you! Good luck! Please let us know how it turns out! :-) Sincerely, Debbie...See Moreannkh_nd
