Care to help me find my dream house plan?
Comments (6)We built off Cool House plan chp-31382. Not a 'farm house plan' and has an attached oversize garage. The nice thing about an attached garage is with any luck, you can orient it on the west side of the house to 'hide' a sustantial part of the house behind it to minimize solar heat gain. One reason we picked this plan was the all hip roof that is stronger and gets an insurance discount here in hurricane country. Also, I wanted to go with a single level home as it's easier to manage heat gain. A 2 story is difficult to manage window and wall heat gain like you can do with a single story with oversize eaves. A metal roof or radiant barrier in the attic can compensate for the extra roof area with the single story. We've ended up with a 2000 sq ft home with an average $130 power bill (includes pumping from well). 10 foot ceilings and heat recovery unit on A/C also helps. I'd suggest you spend some extra time researching all the little things that can add up to substantial energy bill savings as you narrow your plan search. Good luck, Gary...See MoreHelp me build my DREAM White Kitchen
Comments (28)HI everyone, Thanks for the responses. I'm going to bug all of you to help with my bathrooms too! The builder finished foundation today so onto framing!!! I'll be making final selections over the next 2-4 weeks!! kawfeeaddict: Do you know the name of the white granite you used? Can you share a photo? Look at my photobucket inspiration pic and you can see the irridescent tile backsplash...its different but really cool! erikanh, thanks for the thread link. I've look at it several times but some of the pics don't show anymore. I research a bunch of the granites online today and i'm interested in seeing some slabs in person rmkitchen. I'm going to search for my twin! I'm excited if I can find her b/c I'm needing some source info from that inspiration picture and hoping she might have it!! And YOUR kitchen....well i've printed out MULTIPLE photos from your kitchen last week. I LOOOOOOVE it! I even told my designer in the last meeting how I wanted to "frame" and paint a chalkboard area on the side of my fridge. Then I found your picture and I emailed it to my designer! I would love to do the inset cabinets like yours.....so cool. Also love the raised DW. Oh, the marble countertops are just so beautiful....I just can't do it. But its so fun to find someone who really has the same "style".....please share any other parts of you home as I'm building this house so its all a "clean slate". My basic approach to my home is I'm a southern girl and love southern, comfortable things. I live inland but the beach colors, textures, clean, crisp, cottage feel is what I'm going to try to incorporate in my home in a classic but fresh way. Did that make any sense? Thanks for finding me and thanks for sharing your AMAZING kitchen....See MoreHelp me live my climbing rose dream . . .?
Comments (8)I would suggest two roses, one on each side. You don't say where you are located, but in the southern states, You don't have to worry about enough sun unless there is deep shade. I have roses on the east side of my house that only get sun from sunrise to about 1pm then the are in shade with some refracted sunlight. They do very well. AM sun is better anyway. I can't help you with the brick clips. I have climbers against my house, but I put eye screws in the wood trim and attached wire to that. If you want a yellow rose, I can recommend Golden Showers. It's an older climber. The flowers are a bright yellow and open to loose flowers. The blooms do blow quickly, but there are so many of them, you don't really notice. When in bloom, there is a nice sweet honey scent. It does get BS if not sprayed. The foliage is deep green and shiny and sets off nicely against the flowers. Here is a picture of mine, I have it up against the corner of our porch. I have better pictures, but I can't find them right now. It's a rose that will bloom early in the season and then flushes throughout the summer into fall. You will want to groom it after the blooms fade to keep it in shape....See MorePlease, GWers, help me with my layout! Can I get my big island?
Comments (12)doc5md, I hear what you are saying about the aisles. I was rather disappointed to see that. I think this KD was telling me what I wanted to hear rather than giving good design (according to all I have read on GW). I think the large island is very visually appealing, if our floor plan accommodates it. It is where I envision my family gathering and my kids doing their school projects. I want it to accommodate five people because I don't want a kitchen table in that location since we have a dining room table adjacent to the space and can use it when we need a regular table. I am not necessarily restricting us from other designs. However, we currently have a peninsula and I feel trapped when I am in my kitchen when my husband or kids are around. You know, one way in and one way out. Because of our walkway to our garage entrance, we can't do a true u-shape. beenzmail, we do need seating for five. I will send you a message because I would love to see your photos. We probably will end of making the fridge counter depth. I hate spending the money since our current fridge isn't that old, but we may have to take the plunge and sacrifice something else. We will be eliminating that table because we have another one in our dining room and don't feel the need for both. bethohio3, I have a fairly good idea of what the second sink would cost because of some other work we had done in our house about six months ago. We *may* be able to swing it but having a good idea of where this current design would fall price-wise, I am not sure it would trump (I am sick of that word, aren't you?) some of the other wish list items we have. But it is a possibility. Regarding "Other than the 2nd sink, what are your qualms about this plan?"... I think the long run of cabinets may be too long (and expensive). Also, the main sink would end of being one of the first things people see when they enter the front door. Unfortunately, in our household, dishes have the tendency to pile up and I would like to keep them out of sight as much as possible. Here is the order of importance for the things you mentioned: Efficient work zones large island Sink close to refrigerator and cooktop Large kitchen Single sink course411, we can't switch the range and cleanup sink because that would put the range under the window. Lily'smom...totally agree about the island and that is what I am trying to figure out. Is it time to scrap the big island and try to find another layout?...See More- 5 years ago
