Please help me tweak my layout (pics)
Comments (9)Thanks you all! @rosie-I've considered moving the garage door toward the pantry area. I just wasn't sure how far. Right now, it's 18 inches from the pantry cabinets to the frame of the door. I wasn't sure how much clearance I should add for the cabinet doors to make sure they can clear and have room. It would be nice to slightly deepen the island and have a bit more space along the fridge wall. @marcolo-I thought of that too. I like the idea of having the range on that wall, but I was concerned about having the fridge across a high traffic area from the rest of the work triangle, and it would have an island barrier between the sink and the fridge. Would you move the sink down? Part of the concern is trying not to move the sink due to existing windows and exterior brick if we can help it. You should see the layout of my kids' room. Doors and windows in the wonkiest of places. No place to put a bed. Curious what the architect was thinking 50 years ago.... :-)...See MorePlease help me with my kitchen layout!
Comments (21)Your kitchen is similar in size to mine. I have doorways where both of your corners are and no wall where your pantries are, so our layout issues are different, but the space for an island is similar. Having the island would make navigation in a wheel chair more of a challenge, so that might be reason enough to not look further. My island is composed of 21" deep (vanity depth) cabinets on the side with the prep sink and 13" deep door cabinets (basically uppers on a toekick) on the back side. I store small appliances, outdoor plates and bowls and less often used kitchen tools there. The shallow cabinets are a dream for easy access to all those things I used to have to dig for. Not hunting at all. I could see that being a plus for your DH, in general, if not in an island. My cabinet depth is 34" and my counter top is about 37". My aisles are 37" on the main sink side an 40" on the cooktop side, reduced to 37 where the rangetop bumps out (it made DH happy). We had roughly the same space before. We couldn't really change the footprint, so mer made it more functional. We don't have a problem with the aisles, and before we redid the kitchen, the one place we did have an issue was where the island cooktop and sink (only sink then) were almost directly across form each other. If DH was helping prep or decided to "help" by doing dishes while I was cooking, it was a constant butt bump. Now those zones are separated and there is a prep sink on the opposite side of the island. By letting us work on both sides, and even the ends, of the island, we have the same width aisles, but it really opened up our kitchen. I have never cringed and wished for just a few more inches, but I have often been grateful that my prep sink is just a pivot and a step away from both the cooktop (draining, prep, etc) and the baking area (egg goo, bread dough, etc.). And I love, love, love the fact that we kept the original size island (or slightly smaller -- originally one big open box with a huge downdraft blower and a couple of drawers) and made it a highly effective workspace and efficient storage....See MorePlease help me with my layout
Comments (28)I tried to make the 'mud room' as large as I could. I fit in a closet and some kind of shallower storage behind the door...Maybe coat hooks, cubbies, and or a bench with shoe storage? To fit a slider, you'd have to adjust the windows and take away some of the bench and/or cabinets I have in that area. I also broadened the entry into the room from your front hall. I don't know if the structure on the front hall side of things will allow it. If not, you can just put it back and gain more pantry. I just kept feeling that for me, I'd like the family to be able to access the eating area without going through the kitchen to get there from the family room, so that's what started this whole idea. I didn't draw in upper cabs, but you can easily have them all along the range wall, and maybe an upper or hutch to the right of the sink if you're willing to adjust the window accordingly. Did anyone ever see the movie that was spoof on the Brady Bunch show, in which every building the dad, who was an architect, designed looked like their house? Like him, now I seem to be making everyone's kitchen into a version of my layout! ;-)...See MorePlease help me with my layout options. Again.
Comments (32)Thank you everyone! I have given everyone's ideas and suggestions a lot of thought. I'm grateful for the support of possibly going with DH's favourite plan, even though it's very unorthodox. I'm so grateful to you guys for giving me so many ideas and working within the oddness of this room. I really like sena01's idea of running the stairs in both directions, and I've combined that with Lavender_lass's island idea and come up with this: (thank you to you both for the continued help!): The island could having perching for 2 stools, space for a shallow cabinet facing the pantry and also book shelving running along the sitting room side. What I really like about this plan is that the stairs (which rebunky correctly pointed out are dangerous on the diagonal angle) are straight, the range/cooktop area could create a focal point, the fireplace can be viewed from the table and also I can expand the table with the leaves for those times we have houseguests, which is a nice bonus. My only concern about this plan is will I use the island for counter space? Or will it just sit empty unless we have it set up for guests, appies etc (which is not a regular occurrence). As soon as I drew this out, I realized this plan would work better with a range and get rid of the wall ovens for extra counter space. We'll see how much of a fit DH throws over that. -jlc712 - thank you for the drawing and your feedback! A KD actually drew up a plan just like that, but we eliminated it because it had quite a bit less storage than we have now, which we weren't comfortable with. -sena01, thank you for the 3D rendering! I totally see what you mean now. I hadn't thought to extend that peninsula further than the fridge on the other side. Very interesting thought. This is a good compromise if I lose the cabinet run by the pantry in order to have stairs in both directions. This is very helpful, thank you. -Jillius - you have such a talent for seeing a space in a totally new light. Thank you so much for the radical and amazing plan. I will admit that it got my heart beating faster! The more I think about it, the more I would rather go with that plan than the Plan D I have been discussing in this post. I agree that it uses the room in a more logical way. I could even add a gas fireplace (no idea on cost!) over in the sitting area, where the garden window is now, and add windows on either side. I'm going to show this to DH and we will discuss how we feel about going for a huge change. If money was no object, I really think I'd be on board right now. -llucy - You're right that I haven't addressed the uppers at all. It's because I'm so overwhelmed at the footprint, I figured I'd get that nailed down before I confuse myself more! One thing is for sure, I would love (even a small!) prep area that doesn't have uppers in my face. I have been giving a lot of thought to what you wrote about cooktop vs range and how that affects counter space. Thank you for that. -rebunky - you are completely right about the diagonal stairs being dangerous. Whenever we have someone come over who isn't used to the house, we have to warn them about the stairs :( Thanks for your encouragement and for understanding that we only want to make a change if it's going to be much better so as to be worth it! -lavender_lass, thank you so much for coming back for another look at my layout dilemma. I'm so appreciative of your help and I feel better just knowing you've had a look! About the stairs: rebunky was wondering if it might be kinda tight with the arm chair in the way of the stairs. I wanted you guys to see what it would look like. I moved my dog's anti-slip carpet to the line of where the bottom of the new stairs would be. Even in this new plan with the island, I'm hoping it will look okay because that's basically what I have now. What do you guys think? Does this look like an acceptable entry to the room?...See MoreBenjiBoi
