Help Me Decide What To Do Please!

I bought a retirement bungalow that was built in 2001. The house has a good layout and is contemporary overall but I don't know which way to go style-wise vis a vis furniture and accessories. The floors are light-medium oak strip and the walls are neutral (can be changed of course). The kitchen is raised-panel light-medium oak doors (hidden hinges). I love my artwork that is mainly abstract and would like to put it up along side new furniture that I plan to buy. I am thinking contemporary (like Crate and Barrel) or Shaker. I don't want to go stuffy traditional or outre modern.

The only real BIG change that I contemplate is MAYBE having the kitchen cabinets eventually painted white- after living with them for a year.

What say you?

I am really open to all suggestions and want to decide which direction to go BEFORE I invest in stuff!

Thanks.
