Did I mention how much I detest knock-down finish?
Comments (14)Well, I LOVE my recently added knockdown ceilings. Ya wanna know why? because I had POPCORN ceilings before! DH and I did all the popcorn removal ourselves. It was torture, but well worth it. We had a company come out and do the knockdown..DH really wanted smooth ceilings but yes, our ceiling was all wavy and would have to be "floated"and would cost a lot more...so we went with knockdown. We had it sprayed and troweled so it is very big "blobs" (for lack of a better word...you know what I mean, I am sure). This is a 1970's ranch we just purchased a few months ago and are totally renovating. In my last house I had popcorn...and in the house I grew up in? POPCORN. Geez, I hate that stuff! I just did the 1st coat (primer) on the knockdown and yes, it is hard...I have to apply pressure on the roller to make it in all the little grooves and whatnot. My shoulders were bunched up in knots at the end of the day. I guess I don't have it so bad cuz my house is small (2000 sq ft) and the celings are low (8 ft) but I am not looking forward to doing the paint. I keep putting it off. I actually like the look of KD on walls, but my DH hates it so we didn't add it to the house. My DH was a builder and said just what you did...knockdown (and popcorn) is used to disguise shoddy workmanship. We needed it on the ceiling, but not on the walls. Good luck, I am sure your rooms will be GORGEOUS when you are done!...See MoreWhat is knocking down my corn?
Comments (8)< just don't use a havahart trap if you think it's a skunk,> IME skunks are very passive and don't fear much - just don't startle them. One year I was trying to catch a family of coons coming up on the deck for fear they would come right thru the screen door in search of food. During that process I ended up with 16 skunks, 1 possum. 1 blue jay, and 1 feral kitten - ALL before catching the coons. I would just talk so the skunks knew I was coming, placed a barrier over the cage before moving them - talking the whole time. After transport, sometimes inside the car, the skunks would just waddle away after placing them down. The hardest thing to get out of the trap was the possum cuz he wanted to play 'possum'. I just could not believe that many skunks were passing thru here - prob more, I stopped after I got my targets and never had the urge to trap anything else again, well 'cept squirrels but would always, always, always trip the trap at sundown to avoid the curious nite time critters....See MoreKitchen remodel advice, small split level, knocking down walls
Comments (14)Not sure about your concern regarding the fridge next to the sliding door. The photos of the actual space look like there's about 3 feet between the door and the current counter. If you are swapping the fridge and stove locations, it looks like you would still have a few feet of counter to the right of the fridge before you get to the door - so no, that would not bother me. But the rendering makes the space look smaller than the photos do so I'm not sure if you're moving things farther to the right or not. An idea for the pantry and banquette in the dining room, perhaps you could put in a shallower than normal pantry in the corner and incorporate the bench seating into the cabinetry - possibly including a little more on the other side for symmetry if that is important to you. Not sure if that would be actually functional, but it's an idea to play around with....See MoreShould I knock down fireplace wall for open concept or keep it up?
Comments (30)Before I did anything, I'd think long and hard about how I want to use the space and how I want to live in the space. Do you like having lots of noise and seeing everyone and everything? Do you all listen to the same music all the time? Mind someone else's TV watching? Is media viewing central to your main activities in the house? Do you want to have a quiet space? A reading area? Do you have hobbies that should be accommodated? Work from home? Do you use a formal dining room? Do you entertain a lot? If so, is it casual or more formal? Do you have/will you have children and need to keep an eye on them? Need play space? Storage? To me, regardless of how a room may have originally been designed, it needs to fit *your* lifestyle. For example, if you don't dine formally, why have space for that? Once you've thought about how much time you spend doing which activities, then it's easier to figure out how much space you want to devote to which. I view a house as a "plant" that is designed to support the activities and functions that take place in the house. It's how you use it that will determine the layout. Once you figure that out, you'll know whether the fireplace is a help or a hindrance to your lifestyle. Open concept is visually impressive but very public and noisy to live with. A la Sarah Susanka, open concept is great provided you also have an "away" space where you can be private and cozy and away from the madding crowd. We have "open concept" with our Kit, FR, Brk Nook all open to each other. There are only the 2 of us and it seems to work. But we also have away spaces which we use often as well. We've found a balance of the 2 is best for us. That may be a consideration for you....See MoreHU-918398961
