Will my amaryllis bloom this year after not blooming last year?
Comments (20)Last year, my bulbs were in lawless conditions. I bought a children pool and put them in it in their pots. It was easier to water them this way. I just poured the water in and they all got some. But then some rains came and completely drenched the bulbs. They were neck up to the water and they stayed that way for a long time by the time I noticed it and let the water away. So I ended up with most of the bulbs shrunk to tiny bulblets that I didn't think would even survive. Then I had to move to the new house, so I unpotted them, cut the leaves and put them in the new wine cooler I bought for this purpose to make sure that the bulbs do not freeze down. A month later I noticed that the wine cooler froze down and even killed about 10 bulbs. I returned it to the store and just bought a huge standing fridge that had the freezer part separately. I kept my bulbs in that fridge. Then I planted them up from Summer, hoping that they would still come back to me. And to my amazement: More than 50 percent FLOWERED! They shrunk, they were sitting in water, they froze down, they were in dormancy for a half a year or LONGER, and they BLOOMED! I am still floored by some of them. Now, they are out in the flower bed, fattening up. I hope they enjoy the situation. So you see, once they want to bloom, they just bloom, even if they kill themselves....See MoreI'm Back... My Blooms Waited!
Comments (12)Thank you all so much for the wonderful welcome home! I'm so glad to be back! It's great to visit family and spend Holidays with my children and grandchildren... I really wish we lived closer to them. A 4 hour car ride isn't really that far away, except when you're in excruciating pain! It would be so much nicer to live right around the corner, or down the block, or even a few miles away! These car rides are not very gentle on my poor decrepit old bones! While we were gone, I was afraid my Lemon Star seed pods would mature and drop seeds all over, and I thought for sure I'd miss the blooming of Carina and Star of Holland... I also have Jungle Bells trying to poke a bit of green out its top. I got really lucky, and none of the scapes opened. None of the seed pods opened either! I'll have Evergreen, Carina and Star of Holland to cross... and then, I should have Jungle Bells and Pink Diamond blooming about the same time. Get those photos uploaded, Frank! It'll be nice to view your blooms! I think you'll find breeding and harvesting your own seeds a lot of fun... and growing them is another experience you'll enjoy! The process does take a lot of patience, but it's so worth it! I'm very excited, looking forward to the day my first seed grown bulb flowers for me! Kitty, you're very lucky to have found that Angelique! I thought I had read that it was a tough one to locate, being out of production. Beetle, I think Evergreen is the most unique cybister I've ever grown! Even Larry thinks it's extremely awesome, and he comments on it frequently! I think the two seed pods from the first scape are a lost cause, but I am going to try again with scape number 2. Well... we have less than 4 hours until the New Year arrives... this year, I'd like to lose about 25-30 more pounds... and sometime during 2009, I'd like to quit smoking. I know I can accomplish the first thing, but I'm not so certain about the second thing... and so, I make no promises. However, I'm closer to making that final commitment than I ever have been, and that's a good sign. I feel confident that I will quit... I'm just not sure when I'll set the actual date. It will be during 2009, though... of that I'm certain. I'm very tired today... I hope I can make it to midnight! If not, I wish everyone a fabulous New Year, filled with all the joy and hope we can ask for... I wish everyone good health, good fortune, and good love! You are all very special people, and you all deserve the finest this life has to offer... all the best through 2009!...See MoreLost Tag for lavender purple daylily 15', 3 inch bloom
Comments (4)Very hard to ID daylilies unless there is something unusual about them, & I'm definitely not good. It does remind me of Purple de Oro, or Purple d'oro. Mine has the same type of veined look to it, although not quite as deep a purple as yours seems to be. Mine varies from year to year though, must depend on weather. Purple d'oro is "supposed" to rebloom like Stella. Doesn't....See MoreI've Lost my Mind (what's left of it)
Comments (34)Paul, I love to have you paint the view. I'd love to see a picture of your finished work. The mountain to the right in the picture is Bastion and the lake is Shuswap if you're interested. As far as being in zone three as opposed to 4/5, I'm not sure if it makes a difference. Frozen is frozen - right? I think the problem come in with spring freeze/ thaw cycles. We don't normally have these in my experience but 2007 was the exception. I lost about 10 large, mature plants that were in pots. Up to then, I'd been just tipping them on their sides and that has always worked. I don't know what I did wrong, didn't tip them up early enough? Anyway, last year I made much more of an effort to get nearly all potted plants (75+) into an unheated garage. I had always taken the smaller, expensive, newer plants in there but I no longer felt safe leaving any outside. They all came back just fine in spite of the fact that we had snow in the spring after leaves were all up. The trick becomes when to take them out of the garage. Some people have said to wait until late May to be absolutely sure. I have no patience for that so I ended up throwing sheets over them. Maybe you should try with any duplicates you have first. Keep the precious ones protected longer and watch your weather reports. I've been trying to get more and more in the ground but it's a loosing battle I'm afraid. McT...See MorePoohBearLvr
