Help me design my new bedroom!
Comments (4)Winter, What type of doors do you have on the current closet? Mine had sliding and changed to double doors which open out. This gave me an extra 6". Sounds small, but sure made a significant difference for space and access to all. This may be something which wouldn't work for you depending upon location of closet. Not sure how you want to bust into the wall. Is the closet set back where you have to reach in on either side of the doors and want to open up the entire space? Or going into another room to add to closet space? My bedroom is 10 X 14. A queen leaves about 2' walking space at the end of 10'(same length as a king). I've angled the bed in the corner which really opened up walking room. But am wondering if a king would actually take up too much room doing this. Which walls have the closet/door/window? If you place tape on the floor using measurements of bed and the layout of your ideas it will give you a visual of how all would work. Two tall armoirs on each side of the bed could add closet space and save demolition options....See MoreWant to help me choose accessories for blank slate bedroom(s)?
Comments (5)whenicit, Thanks, but I need LOTS of help! The other advantage to the 2nd layout in BR1 is that the headboard is rather high and if I put it along the wall, it won't block the windows which would probably be better. I'll see about adding seating when I get the beds assembled. We may have room and it would give me a project to scour antique shops. That is what I'm planning on doing for a nightstand in the second bedroom. A little shabby/chic, beachy. I was going to look through some "Real Simple" magazines for inspiration. I'm not sure exactly what I want yet, but I though a "weathered" table, perhaps in a fun color, would go nicely with the iron bed. ajsmama, Thank you for the suggestion on BR1. I agree that swaping the nightstand is much better. On BR2, I think I could move the dresser closer to the door. The only think I actually don't like about the dresser in that position in general is that I'm not fond of the look of it from the side, but no mater how far forward or backward it is, I'm going to have that problem... Thanks for all you help! Jaymie...See MoreHelp with bedroom layout design and floor plan (constructive) criticim
Comments (24)functionthenlook - The house location is in Portland, Oregon. So not in a cold climate; I appreciate the comment, I'll look into re-designing the second floor. richfield95 - Thanks for the comment, I'll have the second floor re-designed. cpartist - House will be for myself, I am planning to start a family in the near future. Location is Portland, Oregon; Lot size is 8235sf; I can not cover more than 2650sf, current floor plan coverage is 2645sf. Actual needs - open dining / kitchen / great room area, study / office room, sufficient sized bathroom on main floor; decent sized master bedroom / master bath / closet, sufficient sized bathroom upstairs, sufficient sized laundry, 2 car garage, ability to work from home. I want to make sure the house fits into neighborhood, and most of my neighbors have 3 - 4 bedrooms. jannicone - The great room dimensions are roughly 24.5' by 18.5'; Overall square footage is about 3000sf; For now no kids, but will be starting family in the near future. I will need the ability to work from home. Naf_Naf - I am limited with setbacks on the width of the house, basically cannot increase the depth either because of impervious surface area coverage limit....See Morelayout/design help needed for teen boy bedroom
Comments (12)what a great space for him. so many ideas. first thing I'd do is some built-ins in some of those nooks. simple plywood, paint. For books, video games, collections, etc. that inset next to the J would be the perfect spot for a built in bookcase. Look at Ikea hacks, or DIY inset bookcase tutorials. Ikea Billy Bookcasehack: https://food52.com/blog/25110-best-ikea-billy-bookcase-hacks how about a mural (peel and stick) of some sort? you could do it on the wall or on that sloped ceiling above his bed. bring in some sstring lights and drape them from wall to wall do a lower bed like this, back in that corner, string the lights around it, and remove that nightstand, replace w/a cute table. or something like this platform style bed. put on a regular mattress or a futon mattress. do a diff light. remove that futon across from it and bring in a low-boy dresser of some type. bring in lots of thin, cotton dhurrie rugs you could do a roman clay treatment on the wall and paint a dark color. maybe bring in some faux beams from side to side drape the lights over those: for the lower areas that are wasted space, do something like these low open shelf cubbies (enlarge this pic to see them) decor ideas, lighting, bean bags, get some cheap pine tongue and groove flooring (lumber liquidators) and install it on one wall, or on one of the angled ceilings, or around the desk area, behind the sofa, etc what's under that carpet? some type of wood? you could paint it w/porch paint and thrown down a bunch of cool looking rugs. maybe redo the desk w/Ikea desk hacks. you could get a solid piece of butcher block (or a remnant), span it to fit across the entire area under the window, (use cleats to get it to 'float') and then some pull out ikea drawers. or something like this gray one. maybe hang a light directly over the desk, or get a desk light remove that heavy blue drape, and do an inset window blind. I did this black cellular blind on my sons bedroom window. If you get the blackout option, you won't need the heavy drape to block out the light. something liek this. it's less bulky looking, the desk looks better, (frame out the window w/white trim if you're using a dark shade), and the pendant light gives overhead light in that dark space....See Morenjmomma
