I have Wolf's largest Pro Island hood set at 34.5 inches above the cooktop counter. It needs a (Edit: 6-inch) spacer above it to reach an eight foot ceiling. It is not dainty. Maybe some example dimensions of the parts you envision using and the intended mounting height will suggest a solution. This is the first time that I recall reading about this particular issue here.

Thanks for the response kaseki! I’m looking at the bluestar 48 in RNB gas range. The manual says the top of the cooktop is 37.5 inches off the floor. It says the bottom of the hood needs to be a minimum of 30 above the cooktop. That puts the hood starting at 67.5 inches from floor, and in an standard eight foot ceiling kitchen, would leave 28.5 inches from the bottom of the hood to the ceiling. The two bluestar hoods I looked at (pro-line and pyramid) both say they need a minimum of 30 inches from ceiling to bottom of hood. The GE and Kitchenaid just clearly say in their install manuals that they require a ceiling height of 8’4 and 8’3 respectfully. Thoughts? And thanks again!

My Wolf hood plus 6-inch spacer is 25 inches high. I am surprised that the GE and Kitchenaid units are designed for a non-standard ceiling height, given those manufacturers' traditional middle cost positioning. Brian, I have a 48” bluestar pyramid style hood. The 30” requirement you mention is not true. The chimney portion of the hood can be recessed into the ceiling. My ceiling is over 8’, I don’t recall exactly from memory, but I placed my hood about 35” above the grates and had to recess the chimney portion of the hood a bit into the ceiling. It was an easy install, after mounting the pyramid portion of the hood I dropped down the chimney portion through the attic and screwed everything together.

Thanks for all the help! That makes sense to me catinthehat. My only concern was I am venting out the rear (90 degree elbow if I used the pyramid). But I guess the extra would fit in the joists above the kitchen ceiling but below the upstairs floor...since the up part of the chimney past the elbow is just decorative. Side note...how do you like your bluestar hood? What power blower did you use? In-line, external, in-hood? Do did you have a silencer put in? Thanks so much!

Not a problem Brian. If you need you can always trim the chimney portion a bit to accommodate a pesky joist.

Every setup has different considerations, but for me my hood duct runs up vertical 5 feet, a 90 degree elbow, and then a 20 foot horizontal run out to the side of the house. The 20 foot horizontal run is through the attic, and that’s where I put a silencer. The side of the house is where I have a Prizer 1400cfm blower. All my MUA ducting is under the house in my crawl space.

The bluestar hood has an excellent fit and finish, and it’s nice to have the logo match the range. I don’t like the knob to adjust the blower speed though, it’s a bit stiff but feels heavy duty. The halogen lights I replaced with LEDs to match the color temperature of my under cabinet lighting.

Like kaseki mentioned above, a longer duct length with a silencer and external blower is going to be your ideal setup if possible to cut back on noise. In my setup the blower is completely inaudible from the kitchen. All you hear is air from the hood baffles. Outside the side of house though that blower on high sounds like a jet engine. It’s really amazing how much noise isolation you can get with a good setup.

A range that large is rather unusual for a room with an 8ft ceiling

is it? we have 8' ceilings in our home and I have been trying to decide between a 36" and 48"...didnt occur to me that ceiling height would play a factor in rangetop width?

At 8 feet, the obligatory chandeliers will be too low.
