Unfortunately they are too dark and no way to really ammend that. I would replace with a light neutral that blends with the paint color of your walls and will soften the room while blocking light when needed. It hurts a little financially but I think you will enjoy your room much more when you make this change that will pay off in the long run. You can bless someone else with the blue curtains ! I do agree with your husband. It’s unattractive. There are neutral black out roll up shades that can be used. You could also consider a film that could be placed on the glass itself. It all depends on your budget.

Are they one layer of fabric or do they have a separate blackout liner? Might be a crazy idea but if they have a separate blackout liner, couldn't the dark layer be lightened? If you have leftover fabric from having them hemmed, perhaps you could test bleaching strips. I wouldn't try this if this is just one layer of fabric. The bleach might affect the integrity of the blackout material.

A crazy idea offered in the event changing them would hurt the wallet a bit too much.

Alternatively, you could add trim or light-coloured patterns to it to lighten the blue expanse. Pick one of the lighter colours in your rug. With a bit of ingenuity, it can be done. It just depends if it's worth the time and effort. Might be simpler to sell these and buy something different. The risk of ruining these might not be a risk worth taking.

ETA: Here's an article on how to discharge dye from garments. They mention that it's best done on natural fibers. IOW, if your curtains are polyester, bleaching is not an option.

I am confused over the use of balckout drapes in a DR. If you need them then get some nice lighter color drapes with a blackout liner .

^^^That was going to be my question, if you just need privacy, there are tons of other window solutions. Blackout drapes are usually used in bedrooms.

Sounds like a plan. As for blackout curtains' ideal location, I think they're warranted wherever you need to block the sun and want the look of curtains. For example, I'll have blackout curtains in our family room because the TV is facing the window and the glare makes it difficult to watch during the daytime (as infrequently as that happens).

You can buy blackout/curtain liners that can be attached to whatever kind of curtain color you want. My mom purchased some for a west facing sliding door. She had some lighter color curtains that really let in a lot of heat in summer. The liners are slightly thermal and both light and heat blocking. They are light color so didn't look like a black hole from the outside either.

However, to make them look lux you should have two panels mounted on each side so the pleats show up when they are closed. Otherwise, they look like blue sheets on the windows.

I have french doors at the end of my dining room, and no matter what the color of the drapes, they are going to look like a big blob when closed. You might consider mixing the drapes with patterned or textured blinds, in which case you could open the drapes most of the time, particularly when you were in there. Or if you are handy, sew a patterned panel into the bottom of the drapes. But no matter how you slice it, closed long drapes are a big blob of something on a wall. If it were me, I'd spend the money on blinds for the windows and mix them with the current drapes.

Another option I considered for privacy was fake or real stained glass inserts.

How about adding sheer white in middle of the 2 navy ones?

Or get a double rod and hang lighter color in back navy in front. Close navy blackout as needed
