Blackout curtains with cellular shades
I have light filtering 3/4'' honeycomb cellular shades in all bedrooms in my house. My husband would like blackout in the bedroom for sleeping purposes. I assume the only way to achieve this (without changing our current shades is blackout curtains):
What is the best curtain rod (&black out curtains) to achieve as close to 100% blackout? (i.e. I know some curtain rods extend very far past the window, thus allowing light to shine through throughout).
I am open to all advice/tips for hanging blackout curtains!
I assume I should have 2 curtains per window and they should touch the floor?
Any advice on color vs print?

3 years agoYou can buy rods that have a return where it connects to the wall. That was the curtains sit snug to the side wall and blocks more light. Here is one I’ve used.

Comments (12)Hey There: Honeycomb blinds in 1 inch or 2 inch or somewhere between is a great way for shading. Specially the bottom up top down feature lets you perfectly chose between light management and privacy. There is btw a huge difference between 1 inch and 2 inch blinds - it is how they operate. 2 inch blinds have two horizontal tracks with one of them mounted permanently to the top of the window while track 2 and 3 move up and down on pull strings to achieve the bottom up and top down function. Please be aware of child hazard. The 1 inch blinds operate totally different...there are no pull strings or strings running across you glass - only two horizontal bars that create the bottom up top down feature. You have handle to bring them up or down. Last but not least: Jan is right when it comes to the small gap between the blinds and the wall. Comments (7)Thanks all for your input. pennydesign, that's a great suggestion I hadn't thought of. Will definitely check with manufacturer. Film would probably be a down-the-road consideration. Jamie, we have a walk-out basement so three stories up for the windows in question, which I'm sure is part of the problem. Too windy for an awning, but appreciate the suggestion. I checked and it does look like a roller shade can tuck up between the top bar of the cellulars and the window, as the sills are quite deep. I may just try to diy a small bathroom window that way and see how it looks....See More

I definitely would get a wrap around curtain rod - thank you for that idea. The one I'm interested in has 2 different sizes: 28-48'' rod or 48-88'' rod. Which size rod would I need?
Both windows are fairly close to the wall (only 15.5'' between the wall and start of the window trim). Is this enough space to have the blackout curtains? How much space on each side of the window do I need for the curtain? for the rod?
No radiators - so they can go all the way down to the floor. I should choose my blackout curtain, see what lengths they offer and then decide on the height of the curtain rod so the curtain is just barely touching the floor?
