Fabricator made wrong cuts on quartz

We are doing a full remodel of our home and we purchased our quartz stone from the same place that we used as fabricators. We gave them all the specs for the sinks and faucets but they cut all the bathroom stones sinks incorrectly, and instead of cutting the faucet holes onsite they did at their location which meant they cannot correct the sink cut properly. Now they say they can correct it, but it means we will need the carpenter that did our vanities to adjust the vanities to accommodate the new cuts and will also decrease the counter space between where you stand the beginning of the sink making that space weaker under the vanity cabinet. We think the fabricator should buy new slabs and do the correct cuts again and not have us re-adjust the vanities to fix their mistake. Is this an unreasonable request?

The templater screwed up and the tile shop has to eat the mistake. They of course do not want to replace slabs you wil have to stick to your guns and demand replacement. If this was templated the way it should be done it would highly unlikely this would happen.Your second sentence is a bit worrying those specs are never done over the phone but they take the actual sinks with them to template.

Can you post pictures so we can see the issue? It seems unreasonable to ask you to make concessions if it is their error. Do you have written documentation about the specs that were provided to them? I don't think I'd be happy with the proposed solution. I assume also that there are two sides to this story. Why is the fabricator suggesting this solution rather than accepting the error? Are they arguing it isn't their error?

There are industry standard specs about the location of sink and faucet holes. Which is why your cabinet person would have to alter the cabinet supports if you want something non standard that interferes with the cabinet construction. The manufacturer's templates and the industry standards rule. For a reason.

Still can't post pictures using full site on my laptop but I can post pics using phone app. So weird. Thanks everyone for the ideas. Talked to fabricator, basically he measured/cut wrong. Nothing can be done at this point. They also broke one of the dual vanity bathroom sink when installing vanity counter. When I tried to order another sink for the dual vanity, it'd been discontinued, argh. May need to remove the one sink already installed and buy 2 new sinks. I hate Murphy's Law. Here are more pics. Kitchen peninsula is 123" x 44" plus a another small section that make up the L shape. The seem was done well. A corner was chipped a little. A close up pic shows a surface scratch (really hard to see) and a crack under the surface easily seen. I put an iPhone 6 Plus and a 1.5" glass cabinet door knob on the peninsula as reference. Really love the inset cabinets.

Gen B, the fabricators knew we were changing ranges. Unfortunately, the delivery time for the range was much longer than expected. My question is... does it really matter though. Shouldn't the cut be straight either way. What if down the line, say in 5 years or so, you wished to change the range and they didn't make that particular model any longer? If they would have cut it straight it would've have solved a multitude of problems down the line. When the fabricator was here last tuesday he didn't want to say it, however, he alluded to the fact that the overhang on the old range provided a "safety net". I have a feeling that they chipped the side of the cut out when they were fabricating (because it's such a soft stone) and then decided they had to cut it like this to even it out. After he argued with me incessantly stating that "this is how they do it "standard procedure to cut the back smaller and the front larger", he then went on to say he followed the lines of the cabinet. I believe wholeheartedly that once he realized I wasn't buying the "this is how we always do it" story, he then decided to try a different angle (no pun intended) and blame the cabinet people. It was very upsetting. No apology, no accountability and no phone call back to discuss what they are willing to do.

Home Depot sells sheets of LAMINATE in black , 4 x 8, for 45 bucks . A perfect counter for months if you want to wait for 100% perfection. and a hell of a lot better than contact paper!. Add an inexpensive drop in sink, and you are back in "business" via your contractor , in a single day. But..................as I said " pick a neurosis" : ) Depends your waiting/patience factor.

I'm still a bit confused, as to why you would be the one to give the fabricators the specs... If that's the truth, then you're going to need to go through all expense and change, on your own?

I do have a picture I have attached. They are not denying that it is their mistake, they just are saying they are going to try and fix it without buying a new slab. The cut the sink opening too small and now they have to enlarge it. If they hadn't cut the faucet hole beforehand then they could have fixed it by increasing the size of the sink towards the wall, now the only direction they can go is forwards causing a decrease in the vanity and less support for the stone. FYI they made this mistake on all 3 bathrooms. They have taken the stone back to their facilities to try and find a solution. I want to fight this and have them get a new slab and do it over.

My fabricator made quite a few errors, some of which required new slabs. If they make a mistake, it is their responsibility to fix it. You should not have to accept the option that makes it easier for them. You will use the sinks and space every day, if you can’t live with it, have them correct it with new slabs.

is there no way you could find another sink to fit that exact hole? I'm sure they would gladly buy you sinks as opposed to buying new slabs.

you could give them a chance to fix it, but tell them that ultimately it's your decision whether or not it works for you. If you don't like it, you have every right to demand new slabs cut the way you instructed.

Since they've admitted to their error, they know it's on them. (I bet they will never make this mistake again)

Typically when they come to template, they take the sink back with them so there's no mistakes.

Yes, when they came to template ours, they took the 1 of bathroom sinks & faucet back with them. As Beth stated: .........................

Where was the laser template? At that point you hand them the actual sink. You hand them the faucet specs. You sign off on a drawing that specifies every detail, including edge treatment. It comes back to the site. Correctly sized. The sink should go WITH the fabricator for the cut and polish. Faucet holes are usually drilled on your site. ....

Any good fabricator knows this, and uses this practice. Was this top TEMPLATED at the site, or were they doing the entire thing from "specs" , including some idiocy like "it's a rectangle" ? My guess is the latter, and not the former. BIG BOO. Did you sign off on a drawing ? My guess is no. Also a big boo.

What I would love to know is where was the GC in all of this debacle? I know not one who'd participate in the folly of "no laser" on site.

If you were acting as your own GC......individual hires of all subbed work? I have a hard time blaming SOLELY the fabricator, despite he should know better. Lots of questions here, because if that was correctly done on site, cabinet in place on the wall, sinks in hand? It's pretty basic......and rather hard to get wrong.

Make them redo it. Their cost.

I should mention, though, if you have never had a sink placed as the ones in your messed up counter, go pretend to wash your face in it to test it before they take it out. I would not be able to use a sink that far back, especially if it's not one of those short vanities nobody uses anymore.

How much do they have to cut in the front to make the sink fit? If it is more than 1 inch I would so no. Very unfortunate mistake, but at this point you want to get it fixed and finish your project. Work with them to get the solution you want. Good luck and your bathroom is beautiful. btw, I give my fabricators the paper template supplied by the manufacturers, not the actual sink so they could possibly scratch it.
