Need advice on filling in sunken living room

dreamindecor

We want to fill in our sunken living room with concrete to make the first floor all one level. Yes, we KNOW we should have done it BEFORE we put the engineered wood floor in four years ago, but we thought we’d have to move the front window up and it would be very costly.

Now I’ve seen remodels of our home that have filled in the sunken living room, so I know it can be done.

What things do we need to consider?

It’s a 5” step down. The room is 12’ 10” x 19’ 3”. There are 9” from the floor to the bottom of the shutters on the front window.

Can we pour concrete directly on top of the wood floor? Or would it be best to rip out the wood floor and pour concrete right on top of the slab. My guess is that the existing wood floor is not salvageable??

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
