Get Inspired to GIve Your Main Hangout Space a Look That's Yours Alone
"Make a list of what people typically do, and do the opposite," says Simon Doonan, window dresser at Barneys New York. "You're bound to get some attention." I couldn't agree more, Simon. It's too easy to fill rooms up with catalog looks, which can come together very well but miss a bit of soul.
Earlier this week I wrote about putting a personal stamp on your bedroom. This week I'm turning to the living room, where you can showcase an original sense of style with inspirational finds, cherished heirlooms, artful wall treatments and more.

Add colorful, personalized art. These framed silhouettes in poppin' colors make me think the people who live here have fun personalities.
Use head-turning color. Dark pink is an unexpected finish that turns these lamp bases from lighting to sculpture. I am a total spray-can girl, so this idea makes me wonder what I might be able to paint for an exclamation point in a room.
Bring in a captivating wall pattern. Create a unique focal point with a stencil design or wallpaper above a fireplace or behind a sofa.
Add a light with character. A chandelier is an unexpected touch in a living room. Mix it with rustic pieces to show off your glam-yet-country side.
Group images on a theme. Gather framed pieces and other finds on a gallery wall that expresses something about who you are. Arrange them close together vs. around the space for greater impact.
Go big. Create a conversation starter with large-scale atypical pieces on a wall.
Add the unexpected. What a personal statement this gathered paper look is! Lit up from below with lighting, it creates popping texture.
Instead of using traditional end tables for your sofa, add a different type of accent table, such as a small dresser. You get more storage out of it, too.
Re-imagine your coffee table. Try a new finish and change up the decor pieces on top.
Pair garden stools or other accent tables in place of a coffee table.
From the art on the walls to the furniture pieces, don't choose decor based on a specific style, but on what makes you smile.
Go bold. This room has fabulous, high-end personality. The use of the black wall, interesting art, and black trim and floor molding is a creative move.
Consider a window treatment that captures your personality. Choose something large in scale and a dramatic color that's totally you.
Sunny walls, eclectic decor and a bold mix of patterns showcase this homeowner's personality. Here is someone not afraid to take chances.
