Need advice to finish this two story sunken living room

The mantle need to be replaced, not sure with what, any thoughts? Need something on the walls on either side but decide if I should go with tall skinny artwork or maybe collections of smaller prints? or something different? The room is so tall but not so huge overall....Also would like to do someting with the wall behind the couch. The sofa table there just collects junk but if I actually 'decorated' it we would not let that happen...

would appreciate anyone's thoughts about what they would do...

We need more pictures as we can’t see the whole room.

First thing I would do is find another place for the tv.

Usually in a living room or a family room there is something that everyone agrees they're going to look at and that becomes the "focal point" of the room. It's usually a fireplace or a TV. In this case, I don't see what the focal point would be. The reason that's important to determine is because that is how your furniture would be configured. Your couch should face that focal point and then the rest of your furniture falls in line after that. If there isn't going to be a TV in this room, then you have to make that window the focal point. Move the couch into the center of the room facing that large window. Put two accent chairs in front of the window looking back to the couch. A coffee table in the middle. And a console table on the wall where the wall unit is now with a large piece of art over it.

I would suggest one set of pillows on each sofa. I would move the floor lamp between the two sofas unless you can find a small end table and put a lamp on it. I would also move the white sofa closer into the area because it seems to be out too far in the hallway. But first, turn the rug the other way so that the eye sees the width of the room instead of the shortness from the window to the white sofa. Easy! I would also move the plant on the console, to the middle to balance the two pictures. Lastly, a couple of books or magazines on the coffee table would give a potential buyer the idea that this is a good room to relax and read. Hope you give this a try and post the photo of the remake.

While I would prefer art or a large curvy mirror over that table, I like what you have, but for all the symmetry and square lines. A rug will soften it some but I think you need some curves. Maybe a small curvy lamp like shown in some of Beth's pics, as well as some rounded large baskets under the table like shown in her pictures. Nothing too structured but a bit organic looking. Or a round stool. Love your chandelier. I'll bet it looks magical at night.

No, unfortunately. i think something just a bit larger and hanging lower will do it. there are 65 inches between the couches and the fireplace is wider than that space. thank you for all the advice.

Here are more pics. Guess I should have started with, help me design my room around teh fact that I have a big TV over the fireplace. It's a battle I can't win, although I can do just about anything else. This room is the center of activity in our home and often includes 10+ people watching sports.

It's too crowded, but if it functions as the man cave, I wouldn't worry about it. Find a quiet room somewhere else for your lady lounge and focus your efforts on some serenity. What would I do? I would eliminate so many big openings, especially the one into the kitchen. I would also replace the big sectional with a 3-seat sofa for more flexibility in arranging.

The sectional is too big for the space. You need furniture that's smaller in scale.
