Spreading Wood chips

It is that time of year again and I must chip the pile of branches that I have collected over the winter.

When the pile is chipped it will be about 20 to 40 cuft of chips.

I have about a half acre of grass, that is on a clay subsoil, and live on the edge of the Piedmont Plateau in North Carolina. The area is hilly and the road in front of the house has been cut into the hill making portions of the front yard pure clay.

Is there any reason not to spread the wood chips LIGHTLY over the yard, especially on the areas where the clay has been exposed?
