Syrup

I don't care for sweetened French toast, so add no sugar to the egg dip. And prefer it just with plenty of butter and now and again, homemade raspberry jam. Same with pancakes - just butter. I don't like syrup on anything......way too sweet for me and just makes things soggy :-(

My favorite french toast topping is the way my mother used to serve it, with a slice of cheddar cheese (melted) and homemade applesauce or sauteed apples.

I make a non-sweetened French toast too, and my fave is to top with sliced fresh strawberries mixed with maple syrup.

I always put a pinch of nutmeg in the egg mixture, but haven't tried vanilla, like some recipes call for.

And of course, I cook it in butter.

Good ideas. I'm out of syrup which is our usual topping, but I have a huge jar of apple butter. I think we'll try some of that.

I used to like syrup, but now don't care for the sweetness, so on the rare occasion I have French toast, I'll top it with a poached egg.

I don't eat breakfast but make it for my family every morning. They like my homemade syrup on French toast, and I'll top it with some fruit for them to make myself feel better.

While syrup goes on top, I've always been more concerned about the bottom - the actual bread. It has to be cut thick and challah is the best to use, although I've used just about every bread in the world for French toast. The egg mixture gets a little cinnamon, but that's all.

And I prefer sourdough above anything else but any rustic, dense bread, thickly cut, will work for me :-) And no cinnamon, vanilla, sugar or anything but eggs and a little cream or half and half for the custard dunk. And always fried in butter !!

Butter, pure maple sugar, dark brown sugar, jelly - something sweet with lots of butter.

It depends. I add vanilla to my egg mix, and sometimes top with powdered sugar or syrup depending on my mood.

Butter and maple syrup... I live in maple syrup territory. I only like a little syrup though.

If I make it, usually nothing, but I do fry it in butter, and I season the eggs. It doesn't need anything else. Sometimes I put herbs and stuff in the eggs.

In a restaurant, I'm most likely to ask for no sugar but use syrup because it tends to be dry and underseasoned, but sometimes, the butter is a better choice.
