Can someone help me find this bookshelf?
Comments (16)Is there an unfinished wood furniture store in your area? If so, they should either have a piece like this that you can order painted white (or paint yourself if you order it unfinished). Or else, they can add paned glass doors like this to one of their footed bookcases. I was looking for something similar to this in the fall, but shorter and wider, to use as a tv console, and those were the options I found through my local unfinished wood store....See MoreBuilt in bookshelf help needed
Comments (7)If you have the books for it, I'd do it. But I wouldn't if the bookshelves are primarily intended as decorative space. Also, I think it would look less busy if you have some book groups, like in the inspiration picture on the shelves above the ladder rail, that have matching spines. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting the (in)famous books-by-the-yard decorative fraud. And I'm not among the anti-"clutter", get-rid-of-so-many-books crowd, either. I live with more 10,000 of them and they are everywhere in my house on shelves that span from skirting board to cornice molding. But your inspiration photo appears to have one densely booked-up wall while adjacent ones are normal. That mitigates the overall effect in an attractive, not overwhelming way, at least for ordinary, less book-obssessed households than mine. Two other things (besides the dusting issue): a) the thought of books in a conservatory makes me a little nervous because of the potentially damaging moisture issues, and b) windows that large will expose the books to a lot of very damaging UV light. Not a good thing for books with any intrinsic value. You could cover each book with a library-quality mylar jacket, but that would only delay, not eliminate, long-term UV damage to the covers and DJs. My most valuable books are kept in a room with relatively low external light and I make a point of not leaving the lights on in that room except when I am in there using it. But if you are, like me, intent on living with your books on a daily basis then have them where ever they can fit. And more shelves offer the possibility of more book purchases, so there's nothing discouraging about that! L...See MoreWould you recommend buffet lamps on this table? Also, bookshelf help!
Comments (30)Thank you, I did add a small third object on the console table under artwork. If I leave the table there, I feel it needs some tabletop decor so will live with this for a bit. I have an up light still in package, so will try that on artwork before purchasing something else (perhaps I can hide behind the bird on black box). As far as the elephant in the room, (the off-white bookcase), I have another one in the process of being painted. With the dark floors, darks doors, dark wood bookshelves, my goal was to “lighten it up”, though now that I see it in the space, it’s not great... Original plan was to wallpaper the backs of bookcases, and that’s how I got to the color they are (SW Drift of mist)...it was good with wallpaper but I decided not to use it after painting first cabinet. Perhaps another color would be better. Thanks for your suggestions....See MoreHelp with bookshelf placement
Comments (36)Well, don't purge the books. That doesn't work at ALL. Don't be shy about having things delivered or renting a U-haul if it gets you taller. Special order if you can. Your books are going to need housing at your next home too so it's worth splurging a bit. (Don't forget to nail those to the wall once you get settled on locations. Or go upscale and use actual anti-tip hardware.:P ) I could see a tall wrap-around corner unit by the piano--you'd forgo symmetry and perhaps move the piano a foot or two closer to the kitchen door to make it a bigger space. But the piano can stand up to having tall bookcases on either side because it's got the painting to make it taller; think of them as a single unit. You could even--if there's space between piano and table--do full height bookcases across the entire piano wall and simply block a section of bookcases with the piano. Without measurements or a floorplan, I'm afraid we're all pretty helpless. (People tend to think that a vertical piano has to be against a wall. It doesn't. But you'd still need a place where it wasn't blocking traffic and you probably don't have that. But it's something to think about.)...See Morekmg11
