Guest Picks: Storage and Styling for a Child's Bookcase
A kid's bookshelf can do more than hold books. Use those shelves to keep clutter under control
I recently completed decorating my daughter's bedroom. The final area to tackle was a much-needed bookcase to house all of her stuff. Tween girls (well, my daughter anyway) tend to amass piles of it.
I made a linen bulletin board to display her art and photos, and leaned a poster and a framed doughnut tea towel on top of the bookcase. The fun part, though, was styling it so that it would not only be functional, but also pretty to look at.
I'm always on the hunt for good looking yet inexpensive containers to store small items. With a place for everything, everything is in its place. This bookcase has done wonders to keep my daughter organized and keep things off the floor, which is where everything used to end up.
I have rounded up a few of my favorite storage/organization products from the rustic to the refined. And I couldn't help myself — I have included some small pieces of art to up the pretty factor of any bookcase. — Vanessa from Decor Happy

This is the bookcase, and I love how it turned out. Having a large piece like this (actually two bookcases attached together to look like one) means that there is ample space to house everything from books and jewelry to stuffed animals and CDs. My daughter's favorite slippers even have a home!
LIATORP Bookcase
The beadboard back on the Liatorp Bookcase won me over. It's a charming detail that I love, and painting it in a vibrant color only adds to its charm.
KVARNVIK Box, Set of 3, White
I just adore these jute storage boxes. There are endless possibilities as to what you can fill them with.
KVARNVIK Box with Lid, Dark Blue
I bought two of these boxes to house my daughter's CDs and odds and ends. I love the indigo color and that they come with labels.
Cabo Rectangular Basket, Medium
These wire baskets allow your kids to easily see what's inside. I love their vintage charm.
Linen Pin Board
I made the linen bulletin board leaning on top of the bookcase, but you can save time by purchasing one like this. I find that a neutral background is best for displaying art, photos, etc.
Deep Dip Bowl by Rou Designs
I'm a sucker for handmade porcelain bowls. Even though this one may be meant to hold food, I think it would be ideal for storing hair clips, elastics, etc.
Gold Leaf Birds on Branches Jewelry Holder
This jewelry holder is so unique! I love the gold tone, and the birds are so sweet.
Whitewash Modern Weave Collection
I love the whitewash on these handwoven rattan baskets. The large ones would be great for storing blankets.
Acrylic Case, 2 Drawers with Lid
These acrylic cases have two drawers. I would house my daughter's prettiest jewelry in these.
Glass Shadow Boxes
These are the most unique glass shadow boxes I have seen. They have a canvas liner, can be hung on a wall and can even be monogrammed.
SOFT BIN Grey Dot
I love this Canadian company, and their bins made from organic cotton in vivid patterns and colors are perfect for a child's room.
Valentine Pink Heart Decor Wall Art by Lucy Snowe Photography
This photograph of pink balloons forming hearts would look pretty in a frame leaning on the back of a bookcase.
Small Gold Bird Bowl, Gold
I love Jonathan Adler's pottery for its quirkiness, and these gold bird bowls are no exception. The finish has a hammered detail that will add sparkle and glam to any room.
Grey Felt Storage Box
Items made from felt have a homespun element and remind me of my childhood. These storage boxes could be used in a boy's or girl's room to keep the clutter at bay.
Illustration Art Print Beautiful As You Are Birds by The Little Illustrator
I love motivational sayings, and this one would be perfect in a young girl's room; it's a good reminder.
Tree House Bucket by Jenna Rose Handmade
This hand-screenprinted fabric bucket is the perfect size to perch on a shelf. The leather handles and the linen/cotton treehouse fabric are a striking combination.
Pandan Bins
You can never have enough storage bins. These juicy ones are made from handwoven palm fronds and are perfect for storing papers or bits and bobs that don't have a home.
