laundry room dilemma

I have a front load washer & dryer. I can't decide if I want to raise them off the floor (put on pedestal or custom built pedestal) as I have to kneel down to swap laundry or leave directly on floor. I would like to put a countertop on them so I can fold clothes in laundry room and not fold them on my bed but if I raise them I wont be able to use the countertop to fold. my laundry room is an ok size but there is not another spot for a countertop so above machines is only place to put one. Do any of you have a folding table in your laundry room and do you use it? is it worth having one? I put pics of ideas i have, just unsure what direction I should go.

A folding table would be more trouble than it is worth.

Unfolding the table, setting it up and then having to fold it up again and stash it would be a royal PITA.

Adding that table height seems a bit low to comfortably fold clothes, that folding tables can be irritatingly wobbly and that a table large enough to be useful (i.e., larger than a card table) would be awkward, difficult to find a place to store and perhaps heavy. And you'll be bending over to unlock and unfold the table legs anyway so you'll not be saving yourself from that movement.

I would rather bend over to load & unload the machines than deal with all of that.

OTOH, if you have sufficient vacant wall space, you could install one of those table tops that fold up or down against the wall when not needed.

I have been wondering the same thing as I plan out my re-do. The height that the pedestals offers is perfect for loading and unloading, but too tall to fold/use as workspace (I'm 5' 5").

Would something like this pull-out work for you:

What about stacking the machines and doing a counter with base cabinets, similar to this, the amount of counter space you would have would depend on the size of your room, obviously, and if you need a sink. You'd still have to bend for the wash, though:

I wanted to come back to post some pictures of our laundry space. 1) Because I said that I would. 2) Because you all really helped me and maybe this thread will help someone else in a similar, tight space laundry room AND still wanting FL :) Now, we just moved in 2 months ago, and I live with chronic illness AND my 1st born son just got married!!! So this isn't pretty yet! But I still love it! It's tight but works fine for our needs. I'm also loving my Maytag FL. Never had FL before! I got a great deal on the pedestals and have NO regrets lifting the W and D up to a more comfortable level for the sake of my back. I can still fold and put things on top of them. I'm 5'2 so.... if that helps for reference for other vertically challenged people. ;0)

Just to say, I would never have a stacked set unless there's absolutely no other way to arrange them. It's horrible for service being that the dryer must be removed for pretty much *any* action to the washer. I have a friend who bought an early 1960s foreclosure house as a rental property. It was built with washer connections in a corner of the kitchen (next to the refrigerator) and no provision for a dryer. Previous owners had put a 240v circuit for a dryer in the one-car garage. He opted to put a stacked pair in the kitchen. Had a situation with the washer's water valve seeping last year, which thankfully ended up being a false alarm. I seriously dreaded the prospect of pulling down the dryer to change the washer's inlet valve. It took three guys (average, not wrestlers, LOL) to get it up there. Frontload-match dryers tend to be heftier than topload-match units, possibly more weight for stability when stacked.

Do you really NEED a 'huge master closet'? Or could you just work on your hoarding problem. ;-) You want to trade off lugging laundry up and down stairs out to the garage for a bit more storage? If the laundry room is that big, how about just shrinking it a bit for more closet space? Stack the washer and dryer. I'd much rather avoid schlepping laundry up and down stairs all the time. People pay extra to have their laundry up near the bedrooms and you want to give that up? Will it make a difference in resale value? Probably, especially if people expect a 3-car garage in your neighborhood. And you'll have 3 garage doors with only 2 usable ones; people will think that looks stupid and it might turn them off from the house.

Thank you all so much!! I love your vintage metal detergent sign. The chair is in the room so I can use it when I’m sewing. The cabinet doors open, so there’s plenty of space for my legs. Other than that, I don’t need a rod for hanging clothes. I don’t like to see laundry baskets, so would not add them to this space. I love your question about what make me go “wow!” I like nature (plants, flowers & birds particularly). Carefully chosen decor and well thought out color schemes that are traditional or transitional and harmonious me feel at peace. I really want to put something on the empty wall space, but do not want to clutter it with a bunch of small laundry signs.

mxk3 the height is exactly my issue. I just cant decide what will before practical. raise and lose a useable counter or keep low have usable counter but have to kneel on floor every load!
