What's the most expensive houseplant you've ever seen ?
Comments (32)I'll chime in about the most expensive plant I saw. It's a good story, well, for me it is. Anyways, I have been into plants now for about 14 years, and have always loved tree-like succulents, such as jades and portulacarias. I don't have a big collection at all, but I cherish the ones I have. Ever since seeing a picture of a variegated jade, I knew I HAD to have one. Problem is, I saw this picture in 1999, and have never seen one of these jades in person, let alone for sale. Well, last summer, while browsing around in a large greenhouse that I've been to dozens of times, I decided to go past the tropicals and succulents, and browse around in the annual flower section, which I have no interest in. Upon walking WAY to the back of this large annual section, there in the bowels of the greenhouse sits a variegated jade. I was super exited, however, this jade was 7 feet tall, with a 12" diameter trunk, and had a price tag of $799.99. Obviously, this is too expensive, and also too big for my tastes. But, I asked if I could take a leaf to root my own plant, and the guy said "sure, but you would be better off with a stem cutting", and broke a small chunk off for me. Well, I rooted the cutting successfully, not that jades are a challenge, and this spring repotted it now that it has a vigorous root system. So, after all that babbling, I can sum it up like this: Not only did I find the most expensive plant I've ever seen, I got my variegated jade, and it only took 12 years! Comments (29)Well, I did something yesterday that could be considered uh... "eccentric". I mean, what's wrong with postponing breakfast for an hour and a half to take pics of my 2nd instar BST cats??? It seems some people think that to be strange... Oh, well. Maybe through our good examples these [odd] people can be brought to see the light... p.s: I am quickly deciding that the phrase "like herding cats" should (and does) describe multiple situations. It's amazing how hard it is to get 5 BST cats on the first inch of a finger to photograph. After yesterday's experience, I decided to compose a song to the tune of "We Three Kings". It goes something like: We 5 caterpillars of doom/ We'll annoy you greatly/ When you try to take our picture we can move very fast/ chorus:/O-oh, we will move far away/ From where you want us to be/ We'll come and annoy you greatly/ We 5 cats of doom! -Jmcat...See MoreWhat's the most you've spent on a single hosta?
Comments (20)Hey Tom, I'm in Toronto and would be interested in the name of a good local Hosta seller. My most expensive Hosta's are Hanky Panky @ $35. It's a nice hosta in the spring but not too impressive for much of the year in my garden, looks ratty early on. I also paid $35 for a small 2 eyed Touch of Class. Later in the season I got a large 3 eyed TOC for $25. The 2 eyed $35 one came back as 2 eyes the following season, the $25 3 eyed one came back as a n 11 eyed giant the following season....See MoreThings you've learned that seem to be a good idea, but aren't?
Comments (17)inevitably guest ended up going through the side entry and through my laundry room. Yep, I grew up in a house where all guests funneled through the laundry room, and in my current house all guests come in through the office ... neither is a great situation. I've purposefully designed our new house so that no door except the front door is even remotely available to guests from the driveway. I despise rain head shower heads, but my DH likes them. Well, that's an easy one since you can have two showerheads on separate controls. I'm sure you don't mind the presence of the rain head, if you're not required to use it! No toilet paper holders that need to be released because DH never will put the toilet paper on the holder then. (The truth is I don't either unless we're having company.) Yeah, who needs more effort for thankless small tasks. We don't need a huge tub but do want a soaker. Agree! I don't get the mania for big tubs and for jetted tubs. Big tubs require so much more water, and the water cools off quickly. But a deep tub, that I like. Nice Virgil. Outdoor plumbing included? Oh my, even I'm not from that deep in the country....See Moreeld6161
