Santa and the Snowmen

I'm now past my family party and preparing for Elery's family get together. There will be another tenderloin, some "Mongolian" flavored venison, lots of cookies and fudge, his Mother's Appalachian Stack Cake. Tonight I worked on the cookies. There will only be 11 of us, so I only baked two dozen.

I had just enough of the candy decorations to make a dozen trees with Santa:

And another dozen trees with snowmen:

Tomorrow I'll bake gingerbread, those white chocolate and maraschino cherry shortbread cookies that Elery's son likes so much and make some mocha fudge. Christmas isn't over yet, and then we'll go straight into New Year's Eve, with The Princess and Her Brother spending the night here while their parents go to a party. Life is just one big party out here in the boonies...(grin)

I’m glad you get on well with Elery’s family. You hear so many stories of blended families that curdle instead, which I think is sad.

The cookies look gorgeous! I love the snow :-)

What flavour is “Mongolian”?

I tried a stack cake once and thought “meh”. If you’re happy to post Elery’s mother’s recipe I’ll try it again, perhaps the recipe I had before wasn’t a good one.

Holey Sox, Marion!! They are all over the place on EBay! I sure wish I would have seen it coming, I would have bought up a bunch. Kate, I do have an extra Chef set, but since we are broke for Christmas, I was planning to send to my good friend in StLou. I bought her the Pilgrims a few years ago and she has been so happy with them. They may have them again since they aren't dated. I'll keep my eyes open for them. Here they are...along with the "Snow People" and "Mr and Mrs Santa". Sorry it's blurry. My camera does not take clear artificial light photos...but you get the idea. From Misc. Stuff Boy, this makes me love my salt n peppers even more. I think I have a collection, now! lol Dennis's daughter sent me trout shakers...1/2 the fish front diving in and the back 1/2 flipping out. I will have to be on the lookout for unique shakers in my travels from now on.

Blown Glass Ornaments - Radko, Polonaise, etc.

I'll give my grumpy viewpoint on these. Many years ago my husband's family started me collecting blown-glass ornaments made in Italy. They were sold at Lord and Taylor and other department stores and came in all kinds of fanciful figures. They were quite expensive even then, though not as bad as now. Then I saw fewer of them as the years went by. One summer on vacation in a resort town I wandered into a Christmas store where 10 years previously I'd bought one of my favorite, a peg-legged pirate, and asked the owner about the glass ornaments. She sadly told me that Christopher Radko had bought up many of the small factories where these ornaments were produced. Now he introduces or "retires" certain designs each year and has driven the prices WAY way up. It's this fake collectible market like they did with Beanie babies. I find the whole thing really annoying and rarely buy this kind of ornament any more; when I do, they're usually made in China and are much cheaper. I still treasure my old ones, but I'm kind of glad none of them are marked Radko!

Let's see. I love christmas, tend to decorate in the traditional red/green or with snowflakes, not a big santa fan. I have two trees of my own plus our big family tree. One of my trees is done in SNOOPY/Peanuts ornaments, and one is done in all snowflakes. I particularly love the crocheted ones, my Aunt makes me one every year. I love chocolate, and anything baked. Allergic to Strawberry and Peaches. Also love recipes. I collect FQ's, and I just went through and pulled out about 20 pieces to trade for fabric adoption that were either given to me or I bought. I'm hoping to trade them for mottles and solids, and possibly some batiks as I've decided I like them, although i've never worked with them. I love love love bright quilt fabrics, particularly ones with tone on tone, smaller designs that let the colors show off.

Colleen, I doubt that the "Mongolian" is really even close to Mongolian anything, LOL. It has soy sauce and garlic and brown sugar and some grated carrots. Oh, some onion. Cook it a long time until it's thick, 8 hours on high for my super nuclear crockpot, and serve it with rice or on buns.

I'll post the stack cake recipe on another thread, as soon as I can get it typed out. It's OK, not one of my favorites, but it's a family tradition of Elery's, and I was the only one that wanted to step up and make "Nanny's" stack cake.

I actually get along pretty well with Elery's kids and grandkids. His only daughter is kind of dramatic, but so is Ashley, and so I have experience with that, LOL. Add the fact that I'll get down on the floor and play with the kids, so all the grandkids think I'm just another big kid, and double bonus. So, if the adults are bothersome, I just go play with the grandkids, the oldest is 13, so we're all good!

Ohhh, dcarch, I think Madi and Maci would be very unhappy if I told them I ate Santa! (grin) Elf on the Shelf? Maybe I could get away with that...

And no, that stir fry was NOT Rudolph or any deer with a name, LOL.
