So Cal shady front entry needs help!
Comments (15)Yes...Nandina and not really a bamboo but an evergreen shrub. The berries are supposed to be toxic from what I remember. I've often thought about clipping some leaves/berries for display but no thanks! Too bad since the berries on ours are orange during the fall and red at Christmas. We have 8 HB shrubs that are all in mostly shade or filtered light. Found this photo and other info online... "All parts of the plant are poisonous, containing compounds that decompose to produce hydrogen cyanide, and could potentially be fatal if ingested. The plant is placed in Toxicity Category 4, the category "generally considered non-toxic to humans", but the berries are considered toxic to cats and grazing animals. Excessive consumption of the berries will kill birds such as cedar waxwings, because they are subject to cyanide toxicosis, resulting in death to multiple individuals at one time. The berries also contain alkaloids such as nantenine, which is used in scientific research as an antidote to MDMA (ecstasy)."...See MoreFront entry design help
Comments (5)I like the idea of removing the left side steps. But I would put a railing there. I would also add a railing along the steps. Don't plant tall plants. They will hide the windows. The current ones need to be prune to reduce their size. I would make it an interesting garden. Maybe add a water feature or sculpture....See More1950's Ranch needs front entry redesign help
Comments (2)The posts support the overhang for sure. This is not really a ranch BTW. I am not sure about the rest . I really dislkke bay windows and for sure on an actual ranch. I agree the stones are a mess , new garage doors with some glass and anew front door would do wonders for curb appeal then go to work on landscaping . If you want a front porch there will be a big job to get that done right How often would you use a front porch or is it just in your mind a good idea. You have raised foundation so the steps are pretty going to be needed . The posts really do not suit the house so IMO replace them with some nice cedar ones and the new garage doors in cedar too then paint the siding a nice dark gray and the window trim too. If you want to take this to a MCM look that is what I would do....See MoreHelp With Exterior Windows & Front Entry Please!
Comments (3)I'm not sure what you want to be told and if you are capable of doing anything with what you are told. Maybe this will help. ALL the little windows on porch can be removed along with framing, drywall and siding between them and there will be no weaking of structure. You are free to use your emagination on what to put in the holes created, including drywll and siding that make it look as though they were never there. The ones in office are more problamatic because I can't tell whether room inside has cathedral ceilings (the top window leads me to believe they are or top window has attic on other side. At any rate there's nothing that presents unusual problem with removing them and starting over. Now get a big hammer and vent your pent-up frustrations on them....See MoreRina
