watering advise needed...please help
Comments (3)A couple of thoughts: 1) Last time I checked on Al's current practices, he doesn't even screen Turface to that size (some folks do, but it's not strictly necessary). What I do is use a strainer to get just the finest particles out. I initially did screen to 1/8 in, but a) you get very little of it to use and b) things dry out pretty quickly (I could see that being useful for rot-prone succulent in plastic pots, but I doubt it's that much help compared to just watering less frequently). 2) If the mix is retaining moisture as you would want/hope/expect, I wouldn't worry about what percentage of water is draining out. When I water, I don't even go back after 10-15 minutes usually, I just water once with around a half-strength fert solution. This hasn't caused any problems, so far. In cases where I do go back for a second watering, pretty much water will start coming out immediately and most of what goes in will come out. I believe the main reason for going back though is to allow for better fertilizer+moisture retention, as you've already thoroughly wetted the mix and overcome any hydrophobic resistance to moisture. And you're not just dumping fertigation water with fertilizer you spent money on. If you have no trouble wetting the mix well and aren't worried about wasting small amounts of fertilizer, I wouldn't bother. Nothing in your post sounded like a real problem, per se (correct me if I missed something), so I think you may just be finding 'problems' to worry about for no reason. As problems go, that's way better than, say, spider mites or a root-rotted Home Depot plant that you didn't repot for a year. :)...See MoreOpinions needed--please help and advise! (pics)
Comments (10)Lots to think about! Thank you for all of your insight--please keep them coming! Maybe I should just leave them be for a year or so and see how it goes. That is true---this summer has been unusually hot, AND they were just planted... I may be asking too much from them too soon. The fence is something I'd like to do eventually, but it doesn't necessarily need to be right now.... I just thought since I already had 5 hydrangeas that I needed to move... The limelight suggestion is a good one... but I just planted one along the north side of my house. They are doing great there and are really pretty. But since I only have so much space I'd like something different for the back. Plus, the front of my house is an all white garden (which is why I needed the white limelights that can be seen from the front) so I'd like the back to be full of color. The other thing to consider is that I only have ES and BB in the border I planted. Adding twist and shout wouldn't work there because I only have room for 5 hydrangeas. I just really liked the look of the first picture with the 3 together.... ah, decisions decisions :)...See MoreI need help with my tiny galley kitchen layout! Please advise!
Comments (5)I'm not sure about putting a range under the window. That seems like a recipe for goop and splatter on the window, and also seems likely that, assuming you live in an area with winters, your window is liable to crack/shatter with the temperature extremes of hot from the range vs cold outside. I had that happen in my house when I first moved in, actually, and it didn't even have a range under it, just a sink! So, I'd imagine it being a high risk event with a serious heat source under a window. I think it'd be a lot easier to figure out a good layout with the right side of the diagram filled in. Can you repost a diagram showing what is over there? That way, folks can see traffic flow and imagine any options for that end of the area....See MoreNeed help choosing a contrast cabinet color. Comments (3)IMO that piece does not work with the table and chairs too country i think and IMo you do not space for anything there . Are you lanning on removing the table and then adding cabinets ? If that is the plan just do the same style cabinets in a different color but the same counter and you do not have space for seating but I agrre the extra woork space and storage would be good...See More- 7 years ago
