Elvira has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, 11AM CA time we said goodbye to Elvira. She had been in a rapid decline since Saturday. We even took her to the emergency vets Sunday afternoon because of breathing problems. They put her on oxygen and a large dose of a drug intravenous called Lasix to help her breathe. She was almost 17 YO and has had lots of health problems over the years like pancreatitis for the last 3 years, and arthritis. She also had an enlarged heart. And recently fluid in her lungs.
We choose to wait till her breathing was under control at the emergency vets then take her home. We stayed up with her all night and by morning she was in a partial coma state. Monday we took her to the vet she had been seeing for almost 16 years to give her the final shot. She had not eaten for over 1 ½ days, even when offered chicken and ham. She was always a chow hound and never passed up meat.
I can’t imagine life without her since she has been a big part of our lives for almost 16 years. She was the first thing we took care of at 6AM in the morning and the last at 10PM. She was with us all day, going from room to room, always by our side. She hated to be alone. I will miss her funny antics, she could be such a silly dog. As DH said, "She was the best dog ever."

Comments (39)Thanks to everybody for all the warm thoughts. It was so odd not having to get up in the middle of the night to carry her outside. But I still woke up every few hours. I slept well though knowing she is better off now. I cried the hardest coming home from the vet knowing that I could not take back my decision. I looked up her AKC papers this morning, and found she was born April 2, 1992. So whe was closing in on being 16 years old. The fab four were Missy, Tate, Alley, and Shelby. All Lhasa Apsos. Shelby and Tate were best of buddies, and had a litter of 4 precious puppys about 14 years ago. One of their offspring made the news by finding an elderly man fallen in his garage. With out his persistance, the gentleman would have probably died. Lots of wonderful memories the fab four had at this house. I will treasure them always. They helped raise my three kids here. Comments (25)Kittiemom, I'm so sorry to hear about Stormy. And you Lydia as well. I had no idea about your kitty. It kills us every time we have to do this (and I've done it a few). We have to remember that it's the best thing for our pet, even if not the best for us. They had a great life, and believe it or not, there's room in your heart for another fur-pet when the time is right. While it is always terribly sad to lose our pets, the death I most regret is our last Westie -- because we kept him going longer than we should have done, out of our own selfishness. Comments (48)Thank you every one for all the kind word, poems & hugs. It was a hard decision but we wanted her to go out on the high road. We made the mistake one time of hanging on to a dog to long for our own selfish reasons & vowed to never do that again. When I spoke to one of the staff at the vet's office she said to bring her in. After speaking to Doc he agreed. He remembered us hanging on to Casey to long. Of course I stayed with her the whole time, my husband was at work. We are really missing that sweet little dog, we took her every where with us. Sleeperblues, so sorry to hear about your dog..
