Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Foundation, Front Door & Shutter Colors!

Hi!

My husband and I just bought our first home. The outside needs lots of work and I'm torn on what colors to choose! Any suggestions on a color for the concrete foundation? A deep reddish? The white is much too stark. Black shutters, black front door? We are also removing the awning, adding new railings and landscaping of course. Thanks everyone!

I think a middle of the road - earthy, not too dark - brown or gray would work. Paint the garage doors the same color. Here is a good warm gray.

Do all the other projects you listed and then take pic and ask for opinions regarding the foundation. How's the roof?

Thanks all for the feedback! I do think I’m going with the darker blue, as I like the more classic look and the richness it seems to add. As for shutter size, I hear what everyone is saying and have heard this argument before. I get that the shutters I have are not functional or functionally the correct size. But as Kaillean noted, there are millions of homes with decorative shutters like the ones I have, and homes continue to be built and designed in the same way by all your nationally known home builders. If it was that big a faux pas, I don’t think builders would continue designing homes with non-functionally sized shutters. Practically speaking, the shutters on my home have been there since it was built ten years ago - removing them isn’t really an option, as our siding has no doubt faded from the years of sun and weather it has been exposed to. There would no doubt be an obvious difference in color behind the existing shutter if removed and the siding currently visible, and re-siding my home isn’t an option or desire at the moment. Always interesting to get different perspectives though - thank you!

I like the color of a charcoal roof for your house, and also charcoal shutters. The door should stand out on its own, and could be almost any bright color of your choice. Rusty red. Dark teal, orange, etc. A very pretty house.

We are in the process of re-painting our traditional brick ranch (1-1/2 story) home in the Midwest after 15 years! We have decided on BM Revere Pewter as the body and are keeping BM White Dove as the trim. I tried Simply White to update and refresh but heard it may take two coats to cover so I declined - also, heard it can appear yellowish at times. Meanwhile, I'm having a hard time deciding on shutter and exterior door colors. I've always used something similar to BM Black Forest (green/black) and need a change. Would you do BM Chelsea Gray or Amherst Gray for shutters and Kendall Charcoal for doors or do both shutters/doors Kendall Charcoal? Any tips welcome!

You're removing the awning? What are you going to replace it with? Lots of interesting options to go with new railings. Instead of getting rid of it, you could paint it. In any case, you should have a covering for the entry.

Here is one visual. Gentleman's Gray, despite the name, is an attractive dark blue. Dinner party is a great red. I tried out the other two colors on the foundation and they looked OK. Just to through some ideas out there. I also "painted" the awning white.

If you remove the awning, you will need to replace it with something else, because your house really needs something over that front door. I think an earthy color on the foundation would ground it. Maybe a brownish color. Is there any brown in the brick? If so pick a brown color from the brick, or the color of the grout in the brick.
