Pics posted in reverse it seems. Needlepoint Navy is the lighter blue. Charcoal Blue is the darker of the two.

Ignore the shutter naysayers. There’s nothing wrong with decorative shutters!! I like both. The darker blue looks more classic with the tan. The lighter more casual/informal. Which suits your style?

Both look good but I favor the lighter one. and you have it done already. live with it for a while.

the light blue is fine,,,,but I do like the darker one more. gives some very nice contrast and drama. I would do a glossier finish for you front door though. At the very least give it 2 coats of a UV exterior varnish in a semi-gloss (over the blue color) or else your paint color will fade.

I really do like the lighter color but if you want to change it I like the idea of removing the one shutter and just leaving one on the window on top of the door. Looks more balanced.

I like the darker blue much better. I know a lot of designers on this site dislike shutters, saying they’re all too short or don’t add anything. I think manufacturers make them in certain sizes. Anyway, a couple of possible suggestions to enhance front entrance even more. Do you have room for an outdoor loveseat on the left wall? With pillows, that would be nice. Or how about a larger, taller potted plant/tree in that corner? The plantings you have now seem small. I’d like to see more “wow” on that patio entrance.

My vote is for the darker color (whichever name it is). It adds more contrast and pop. Think someone suggested removing the shutters. Definite NO on that. The shutter help relieve the unrelenting linear quality of the siding.

The only window that shutters work on is the one above the door make those wider and then I like the lighter color it suits the house IMO. Add a print pillow on th chair with the same blue in it.A much taller plant pot filled to oveflowing with seasonal plantings and I never like wreaths except at Chistmas but that is just me.

Yes...the darker color looks great. Agree with no shutters on the double window for the reason Rawketgrl mentioned...window's just too big.

Enough with the shutters! There are functional shutters and decorative shutters. They don’t need to look like they close. This is a style/preference issue and not a “rule”. Millions of homes across North America have decorative shutters (that “don’t fit”). It was very common on post war homes and very much in keeping with maintaining the integrity of their style. So sick of this mantra that makes people feel bad about their homes.

To me, the problem is not with decorative shutters generally, it's that they should be a size that indicates that, if closed, they would cover the windows. That's a valid aesthetic point in my opinion.

Most shutters I see are decorative and not sized right. I think you can sometimes get away with it if they're just slightly small, but a big double window with very narrow shutters is...as someone already said...glaring.

The reality is shutters that “don’t fit” were common on many bungalows and ranchers in the post war era.

For some, staying with the intention of the original architecture (however humble) is more important than ripping everything down and replacing it with something “better” based on questionable advice from random people on the internet, or the latest trends.

Thanks all for the feedback! I do think I’m going with the darker blue, as I like the more classic look and the richness it seems to add. As for shutter size, I hear what everyone is saying and have heard this argument before. I get that the shutters I have are not functional or functionally the correct size. But as Kaillean noted, there are millions of homes with decorative shutters like the ones I have, and homes continue to be built and designed in the same way by all your nationally known home builders. If it was that big a faux pas, I don’t think builders would continue designing homes with non-functionally sized shutters. Practically speaking, the shutters on my home have been there since it was built ten years ago - removing them isn’t really an option, as our siding has no doubt faded from the years of sun and weather it has been exposed to. There would no doubt be an obvious difference in color behind the existing shutter if removed and the siding currently visible, and re-siding my home isn’t an option or desire at the moment. Always interesting to get different perspectives though - thank you!
