Miele/LG Steam/Whirlpool Duet Steam ?
Comments (23)My thoughts? First - what do you want and need in a washing machine besides a strong assurance of low vibration? Do you need any special cycles? Do you often like to do hot washes? Etc, etc... A machine that may not do the wash cycles you desire, but has low vibration is just a different set of trade-offs from accepting some vibration but doing the wash as you desire. Getting the wash done to your requirements should be the primary requirement and then look for the lowest vibration. You have a second floor laundry room. With this type of setup the big questions for a HE machine are: 1) How quickly can you get hot water to the machine? 2) How hot is the water from your DHW source? Since the Samsung will only use it's internal heater when doing a sanitary cycle, the answers to the above two questions will really determine what the machine can do temperature wise. Our 2nd floor laundry room has a dedicated, insulated PEX hot feed directly from the DHW tank. I checked the other day and the hose fittings felt hot within 10 seconds of the start of flow so it's getting the hot water very quickly. With our DHW set at 131F, a hot fill at the machine was still only about 110F. The SS drum and clothing suck up a lot of energy. In a machine whose internal heater only operates in sanitary, that would be the best we could do for a hot wash. With less optimal piping, it wouldn't even be this good. If we set our DHW source to 140F, I'd guess we could get a ~115F fill. Some people don't care about, or never do hot washes. If that's the case, the Samsung or any machine with no/limited internal heater would work fine. Anyways, just a consideration thats very important to me. FYI - Whirlpool and many LG's (certainly their top of the line) will use their internal heater in a number of cycles (but not all) besides sanitary. Samsung's answer to this would be their silver care stuff. Believing in this vs. actual hotter temperatures is a leap of faith. Also have to consider the environmental and unknown nano health issues of the "Ag" approach....See MoreFavorite mystery authors, please (I need a new one)
Comments (51)I'm hoping for another book by Julia R. Fleming about the helicopter pilot turned Episcopal minister, with 'feelings' for her small town's chief of police. Dramatic, very human characters, *funny*, unpredictable. I liked Anne Perry's books set in England between the wars, but she began to repeat herself -- writing too much, too fast? DH and I ejoyed Silva's books featuring Gabriel Allon, but...eventually the character is running out of steam. Great plots! Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko is another great character. ("Gorky Park", etc.) Love Sandford, Robert Crais, the late Donald Westlake. (So sad there will be no more from him.) S. J. Rozan! Her Chinese-American detective Lydia Chin and her 'friend'. ("The Coldest Place") Who is the author who writes about books and book sellers? Lives Minneapolis, I think. May I mention my modern favorite book, "City of Thieves"? A 'fairy tale', a mystery, reads like Dostoevski might have written it if he'd lived through WWII. Alan Furst -- "The Polish Officer", etc. Philip Kerr's character Bernie Gunther in the "Berlin Noir Trilogy" and more. (Another character who must eventually wind down...so sad.) Oh-oh, I've really stayed from the OP's request. Sorry, Susan....See MoreTraveling to see your favorite author
Comments (25)susanjf, you are so nice to have checked that info for me! As I mentioned before, I am not so fearless anymore, I'd probably have a stress attack driving thru Chicago. I do have a cousin who lives there, she's a jazz singer. Her name is Alison Ruble (has a website also). I bet Jeff Smith's signing was memorable. lol. I purchased "Falco: The Official Companion" from Amazon just a few minutes ago - in hardcover so less. Usually I only buy paperbacks. In case anyone is interested, here is the list, in order of publication, of the titles in the series. I said I had read "all 21", well I should have said "all 20". The companion novel is number 21. The Silver Pigs (1989) Shadows in Bronze (1990) Venus in Copper( 1991) The Iron Hand of Mars (1992) Poseidon's Gold (1993) Last Act in Palmyra (1994) - my favorite of all Time to Depart (1995) A Dying Light in Corduba (1996) Three Hands in the Fountain (1997) Two for the Lions (1998) - my second favorite One Virgin Too Many (1999) Ode to a Banker (2000) A Body in the Bath House (2001) The Jupiter Myth (2002) The Accusers (2003) Scandal Takes a Holiday (2004) See Delphi and Die(2005) Saturnalia(2007) Alexandria(2009) Nemesis(2010)...See MoreProlific authors you still read.
Comments (20)Rosefolly, Do you think we change as well when we age, and our brains seek a different kind of book or reading? I use to read, when my children were young and needed so much of my time, Danielle Steele cover to cover. It filled the need to read when my mind and energy went in so many different directions. Now, I have no interest in them whatsoever...the last few I tried I couldn't read more than a couple of pages before becoming very impatient. But I can read history books and biographies, science based books for hours on end, which I had no hope of reading in those days. However, I do remember getting so caught up in Trinity by Leon Uris, that my four year old came over to me, after saying my name several times, took the book out of my hands, and looked me straight in the face and said "Mom" in a strident tone. Yes, he is an avid reader to this day, some 36 years later!...See MoreUser
