I would remove the fake plants and drapes. Can you replace the chandelier? Maybe update artwork with larger pieces, perhaps something contemporary or maybe some meaningful vintage posters, like from all posters? I think the set is fine. It just looks like Fussy decor if you are young people.

How about painting the set the same blue as you have in the rug? If you don't want to paint the entire set that color, you can paint the chairs and table legs blue and the table top either dark brown or off-white, depending on how much light the room gets. Paint a border around the table top (6 inches) to make the set all tie in together. If you change your decor often, paint the set in more neutral colors like cream and dark brown. Ask your local paint store for help (as well as youtube videos) in techniques for painting wood furniture.

The drapes are to bedroomy , a new light fixture would be a plus especially if it cast light down on the table , and the rug is too small, not sure about the purpose of the stool in the corner and one nice larger piece of art above the buffet would be nice

Check the light bulbs in your chandelier to insure that the wattage is high enough for your needs and that the color is pure white rather than a yellow light. White shades will improve the quality of light as well. Add some color in your artwork...no cupcakes, no animals...go to an art gallery, and art show,a local art school to find work that appeals to you. Rug is too small. Try putting one chair on each side of the table, rather than the current arrangement....although from your photos the table may just be too big for the space.

Room looks as grannny's room. Beverly gave you great idea about painting chairs in black glossy color. Paint the room in white, get nice drapes in proper length and hang them on from ceiling to the floor.

Consider white curtains with a black design in 92"-93" to hang close to the ceiling.

Hi again, if indeed you have office equipment on the shelves, maybe you can find big baskets to hide the stuff . World Markets usually have a good selection of baskets and then there arealways online sites. Ballards and Pottery Barn have the chandelier shades you are looking for.

Spend an afternoon at your local art museum and/or visit local artists to teach yourself about art. Finish the day with a pleasant drink and consider what you liked and why...good luck.

I agree with Anne Drake's suggestion of using spray paint for your chair/table legs. It is somewhat unconventional and a bit more pricey than buying a quart of paint, but the results are quite nice. I used spray paint on my dining room chairs and was very happy with the results. Prep is key, though, so don't skip the scuff sanding to enhance adherence. The black will look great!
