Refresh it or gut it? Tricky kitchen layout.
Comments (39)My old galley kitchen had a 3' aisle and I had no problem with it, so I don't think I would find a 3.5' aisle too tight, especially given that the peninsula side wouldn't have upper cabs. However, I don't think I'm a fan of the peninsula because it leaves us only one aisle into the actual kitchen. With the island set up we have now, there are two, so if I am cooking and my husband comes in from outside and needs to get to the sink, he can access it without walking past me, or if we both come in with groceries, etc., one can go to the far side of the island and the other cut in on the side closest to the door....See MoreKitchen Refresh
Comments (6)First…the ceiling. The paint finish you chose is way too shiny. I also think it and the wall should be much lighter. Choose a matte finish. I am not as familiar with S.W. as I am B.M. and I looked at the Dover White you put in the hallway and the lightest color on that strip was Whitetail. Do that for the walls and ceiling. Second…the island. Piaint it, maybe the light blue gray of the tile behind the cooktop…possibly B.M. Whitestone. The dark fan and the stained glass pendant aren’t helping with the lighter look. If you are not attached to the light, I would suggest you replace it. Your appliances are dated, but who wants to replace expensive items when they are working fine. When you do get around to it, choose stainless and change the fan to a simple 2 blade stainless one....See MoreKitchen refresh on small budget
Comments (47)Agree with much of what you said. Forget painting the cabinets. Can you remove the backsplash and change it to something lighter?? Remove the scallop. Change over the sink light fixture. Maybe a can light?? Remove the appliances all over the countertops. As an experiment, remove every single thing off the counter tops and see how light your kitchen actually looks!! You would be surprised. The counter top appliances soak up an incredible amount of light. Is there someplace else they can go? A small not too deep cabinet in the eating area? Look at under cabinet lighting. There is some great LED lighting that can plug in....See MoreHow can I refresh or update this kitchen
Comments (13)Backsplash comes after countertops, so if after living there awhile you aren't thrilled with the black, then wait till there is the budget to do both. There is nothing wrong with the black, but people have their personal preferences and black might not be yours. Backsplash with wood kitchens looks best if kept simple. I think there are some black counter wood kitchens in the idea book I posted - most are a version of cream subway tile or similar. Do not do the small glass, multicolor, mosaic tiles. I know they are all over the home center stores, but they are no longer popular and are often too busy with wood cabinets. What looks pretty in a 12" x 12" sample is often too busy over an entire backsplash. I do have a small island in my wood kitchen but my kitchen lacks your counter space. See if you need it or not - if the present owners take it then you can decide if you are fine without it. I like mine but I am the only cook usually. It is in the way when many of us are in the kitchen at once, but I am fine with that because the extra counter space is necessary. We've all learned to dance around each other during the quarantine:) I bought mine through an Amish furniture store: https://www.houzz.com/hznb/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784291...See Moreapple_pie_order
