Before and After: Blue and Brass Refresh a Kitchen in Bel Air
Freshly painted cabinets and new surfaces and hardware update this kitchen in a Los Angeles couple’s first home
Before: The original cabinets and range hood were light-stained oak. Sterman refinished them but retained the kitchen’s layout. He replaced the granite countertops, tile backsplash and original wood floor.
Sterman sanded down the cabinets and range hood and covered them in a custom shade of St. Bart’s by Sherwin-Williams. He also removed the cabinets that flanked the range hood to highlight the refinished hood and make the space feel lighter. New brass pulls add a contemporary touch. “There’s lots of cabinets in this kitchen, so it was worth losing a little storage space for the overall look,” Sterman says.
Marble-effect quartz countertops now stand in for the granite ones, and 3-by-6-inch beveled subway tiles make up the backsplash. New gray-washed oak planks cover the floor.

Before: The original kitchen had a large cabinet with built-in drawers at the end of the peninsula. Fabric valances topped the windows.
The homeowners felt that the valances looked dated, so Sterman swapped them for vinyl roller shades that resemble grasscloth. He also replaced the faucet with a semiprofessional one that has a flexible spout.

Sterman replaced the cabinet and built-in drawers at the end of the peninsula with a floating shelf made out of reclaimed wood. “The space feels so much more open and airy now even though the layout is the same,” he says.

Who lives here: A young married couple
Location: Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles
Size: About 325 square feet (30 square meters)
Designer: Richard Sterman of Palisades Kitchen & Bath
After buying their first home in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, this young couple reached out to home remodeler Richard Sterman to update their kitchen. Since they were on a tight budget, they asked him to find ways to refresh the kitchen without breaking the bank. One of Sterman’s biggest cost-saving moves was to refinish the cabinets and range hood. “The cabinets and hood are about 35 years old, but they’re made out of solid oak, so they really just needed to be updated,” he says.
